Gatemouth Brown was a fabulous guitarist. He could play damn near any style of music and most instruments. He even played some harp. (Most people here probably wouldn't appreciate his playing.) His guitar instrumentals from the 50's are amazing. He performed at one of the first Chicago Blues Festivals in the 1980's along with Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland. He tore both of them up.

Incredible. Roy Clark (also an amazing guitarist in a variety of styles) just seems stymied and unable to come up with anything that rivals Gatemouth's blazing but fluid and tasty solos. Looked like they were both having fun though. Take the A Train on Hee Haw. I somehow missed that episode in my teens. I've been enjoying a lot of the Hee Haw stuff on youtube lately. This time around I'm watching it more for the music than the leggy gals. Well, mostly anyway.
Brown's guitar work is always wonderful, at the sweet spot between country picking and a bluesy variety of swing. Fluid is the word. Here's a clip of Brown with Dizzy Gillespie, where we get a good taste of Gatemouth playing guitar, harmonica and violin! ---------- www.ted-burke.com

I saw Gatemouth in Philadelphia in 1990. It was one of the finest performances I've ever seen. The man was incredible. Late MBH member Big Nancy was there at the festival blowing harp w/ Sonny Rhodes band. The was Buddy Guy, Bob Margolin w/ Pinetop Perkins, Lonnie Brooks, and some others I've forgotten. Gatemouth stole the show in my opinion. ---------- Reasonably priced Reed Replacement and tech support on Hand Made Series Hohner Diatonic Harmonicas.
