So, I've had my chromatic Hohner CX12 for a few years and figure it might be time to invest in the next step up even though I know logically it is still adequate for what I do with it. Emotionally, buying more harp stuff often appears to be more satisfying than the requisite practice to become a better player. Any suggestions for the next chromatic to add to my harp collection?

"Emotionally, buying more harp stuff often appears to be more satisfying than the requisite practice to become a better player." - You sound like a very good candidate for "Harmonica Customizer".

If you really enjoy chromatic, I heartily recommend getting your CX12 customized, for improved playability. I recently had this done to a Suzuki SCX64, that is already a very good instrument, and was amazed at the improvement. Now, I could have purchased another equivalent chromatic for the price of upgrading, but the upgrade made my SCX into a really great instrument.
I guess it depends on how much time you’re going to be spending on the harp, and what type of music you play.
That being said, you might like the 16 hole to add to your collection. That low octave is great to have available. The SCX is excellent quality for the price(I got mine new for $220, I think). You could always upgrade later if you felt the need. Also, SCX comes as a 12 and 14 hole.
If you love the CX12, you could opt for a tenor version, or a different key perhaps.
There are lots of makes and models to check out.

I've had a SCX12 for like 4 or 5 years now and love it. It would have been nice to have a 16 hole. Never had a redone chromatic to date. May be a good idea.
I've had a Hering 5148 for even longer- maybe 8 or 9 years. Good harp but I doubt they are even available in the US these days.
My only other current chromatic is a Hohner Chromonica II, really great Looking and fair playing harp.
