Now that is a challenge! Short Stuff has a very dated style of funk, from the 1980s when people went a little crazy electronically processing all the instruments. I don't know anybody with that particular funk style today, but 1970s big band style funk with less processed sound and intense horns is making a comeback thanks to "Uptown Funk" by Bruno Mars, so who knows where it may go. You get a little taste of it in various performers who incorporate some of the funk/hip hop vibe: Son of Dave, R.L.Burnside, Kid Koala (12 Bit Blues), Even some of Paul Meredith's stuff with Dr. Saxlove. But I can't think of any band that is consistently using harp in a funk context the way Jim Liban did.
I'm a big fan of the early Short Stuff. Primarily of their first two albums. So I've tried to record my second album in such style. Sorry for self-promotion
