I have a speaker question for all of you cone heads out there (sorry, had to do that at least once).

I built a LW 6L6se amp that I stuffed into a SS Fender bass cabinet.
I need to get rid of the stock 12” speaker soon, and ran across 6x9 PMR hemp recones that got my attention. I was even thinking of the possibility of stuffing 2 in there.

One other thought is to put a 10” round speaker, instead of a 12.
I would say my budget is in the $90-100 range.

What are some of the advantages/disadvantages of 6x9’s in general?

What's wrong with the 12" speaker?

Joe, did my wife tell you to ask that? There is nothing wrong with it, just a plain old stock Fender Sidekick Bass speaker.

Brilliant idea!!
I bought a minty National Tremotone with twin 6x9 speakers and the amp is the bomb. Tone for miles and are those speakers loud!!

I built a Mojo Tone Tweed Princeton amp and installed a 10" speaker in it, but I'm going to install 2 oval speakers at some point.

I know Vintage 47 sells an oval speaker, but this is the first I have heard of a re-cone kit for them. that's excellent news because up until now, there was no source to re-cone the 6x9 speakers.

Go for it!! I bet a ,lot of those "5 watt wonders" woulkd sound terrific with an oval speaker.

Thanks for the advice. Yep, I guess I need to see how it sounds to my ears. Those 47 speakers are on my list to consider too. When I save up a little cash I’ll build a baffle and give it a shot.

I’ll follow up with a review of sorts, may even get up the courage to post a video. I’ve definitely improved since the last one I posted ;)

The oval speakers made by Rola used in the old Nationals/Valco's are actually 6" x 10-1/2", a little wider in the center, like 6-1/2". Both the square magnet and button magnet. So there is no recone kits available and probably never will. I believe Vintage 47 makes an adaptor for their 6x9's. Only problem you may encounter is impedance mismatch. If I remember correctly the Dual Rolas are 2 ohm each.

I ended up with the Vintage47 6x9. I have my new baffle cut, and am hoping to get it painted this weekend. Just need to add grille cloth and then fire it up. The amp I have is a Lone Wolf single ended 6L6 w/4 and 8 ohm outputs that I built. I can’t wait to get it back together and fire that baby up ??

Let’s try this again. I finally got the amp all buttoned up and I really like the way it sounds now. It’s a 6L6 SE circuit with a VVR.
My playing isn’t great, but I will post a sound clip next week.
I engraved the faceplate using the CNC machine where I work, kinda proud of that.
I put new grille cloth on, it’s the blue Fender style, almost need a magnifying glass to see the pale blue but it works for me.
Here are some pics.
