Hi there, I've been trying to explore how to incorporate beatbox and other mouth sounds into my playing for a while. I've found that there are actually a lot of different styles and approaches that can be tried! My goal is to seamlessly incorporate more melodic playing with the beatbox rhythm. Here is a sample of my playing with a minor harmonica. Does anyone have any inspirations to check out or anything of their own to share?
Talking through the harmonica works too, for a neat effect. One of the first things I recorded in audacity when I was just learning harmonica was a layered track where I talked through the mic for a bottom loop and then played harp over it. (Looping is also fun if you lay down a track with a couple related keys like C and G. It gives you more range.)
I know this was as much of a demo as anything else, so take this with a grain of salt. It felt a little busy, but I liked a lot of parts of it. I would have liked to hear some theme running through it, and there were a couple spots where it seemed you dropped the beat switching between harp and beat boxing early in the piece, but there was definitely a lot of cool stuff going on.
Definitely check out Brandon Bailey and Son of Dave. You might also want to look into adding some loop pedal stuff. No harp, but someone like Dub FX and Mr Woodnote might give you some ideas.
