Carlos del Junco and I have come up with a first-of-a-kind workshop: Demystify Overblows. We will explore Overblows in great detail from harmonica setup to using overblows to make great music.
This is an overwhelming topic. Our goal is to advance attendee's understanding and skills. This workshop is open to players of any level who are curious of, knowledgeable of or skilled at obverblowing.
Registration is now open. Space is limited and registration will close when the workshop is full.
Can't make it to Ontario (baby on the way!), but man I would certainly go to something like this in Chicago. I've been setting up my own harps for OBs since 2007 or so but all my knowledge is pretty much just the basics.
Great Idea, Andrew! Carlos del Junco is my very favorite OB player. I remember years ago a Hohner champ dude named Jim McGlaughlin showing me how to overblow. Didn't work. :-) As a historical aside, Jim owned an odd set of brass Joe Filisko harps. I think Filisko gave up on brass because it was too expensive and time consuming. Oh, oddly enough, McGlaughlin liked Lee Oskar harps. They get a bad rap. I have quite a few LOs and one is an Eb set-up to OB. Getting them not to whistle or be just pain noisy isn't as hard as one would think. Of course I pretty much stick w/ Hohners save a Suzuki Gregorie Maret chromatic I really like. LevelUp: Congrats on the Baby on the way! Unfortunately, we are only planning to hold this event this one time.
We chose Kingston because it's within striking distance of quite a few big cities (Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Buffalo, Detroit, NYC...)
MP: Yes, Carlos has a distinct sound. He has a unique use of overbends as well as just amazing phrasing. He's also a phenomenal teacher. Very meticulous. Everything is built upon a solid foundation. I've seen him spend 20 minutes solid getting one student to hit a bend on pitch before moving on with the rest of the riff they were working on.
1847: Maybe, but the travel fees would be a killer!
Timeistight: Indeed, mid-October is the best time for to take a drive up!
For those who opt for this, it's a Semi-Custom harp that has been specifically set up for this workshop.
Participants will leave with a harp that is set up to play overblows on 4,5 and 6 and the 7 overdraw as passing notes. But built-in to these harps will be a few common flaws that are easy to see once you know how to recognize them and easy to fix.
A big challenge with harp customization skills is being able to see, hear and feel the problem.
With each of these harps having these specific problems carefully built-in, each participant will be able to know what it's like to find the problem, correct it and even overshoot (and then back up).
This will speed things up going through a few of the harp set-up topics. It's not mandatory - folks will still get great exposure by working on their own harps during the workshops.
Azajac. Yeep Carlos is the man. I tend to avoid the draw overbends since I don't have much use for them but that doesn't mean I'm dismissive of them. A guy w/ serious control and is playing to make music rather than show off tech skill has my vote. ---------- Reasonably priced Reed Replacement and tech support on Hand Made Series Hohner Diatonic Harmonicas.
