The chromatic harmonica can play any note in the chromatic scale. I like chromatic, I play different keys of chromatic, but it is a different instrument with a different sound, and will not sound right for all kinds of music. You should base your choice for which instrument on what best suits your musical interest, not on the challenge of learning to bend. There are a lot of tutorials on line, and there are teachers listed on this site that can help. Even Winslow Yerxa's books on diatonic could help.

I love both instruments, but some kinds of music sound best on diatonic, and some sound best on chromatic, and some sound good with either.

Thank you Doug. There's a tune Marcell et marcel by JJ Milteu I trying to play, involves bends on holes 2 and 3. I was wondering if I could play it on chromatic

3 hole bends you don't usually want to go all the way down (except for 3rd position)

move the hump in your tongue further forward in your mouth to lower the pitch.

play the pitch on a piano and tune your mouth until you get it.

5 minutes several times a day, soon it will be automatic

Hi Geo

As Doug said you can play any note of any tune on Chromatic. On Marcelle et Marcel using a C Chromatic rather than the C diatonic that JJM played on that song you will not even need to push the slide in. There is a double bend on draw 3 here(-3**) which is replaced with a draw 3.

1st Phrase on Diatonic = +1+2+3+4+5-4+4+5+4-3-3**+4-3+2
1st Phrase on Chromatic =+1+2+3+4+6-5+5+6+5-4-3 +4-4+2

There is a double bend on draw 2 later and this is played as draw 2 on Chromatic.

BTW Blow 4 and Blow 5 are the same note on the Chromatic, and the placement of the draw notes are different so it will need a bit of adjustment to get used to the different breathing patterns but on this tune it does away with those pesky bends and even the use of the slide.
