I saw this teaser vid from @mooncat on Instagram and am wondering what brand it might be? Any ideas?

On that topic, what's your suggestion for a chromatic harp? I have learned to play on my grandfather's antique Hohners. Super Chromonica in G and a Chromonica 64 in C. Trying to decide if I should replace the buzzy windsavers and get a few more keys, or get my first new chrom.

@mooncat that's awesome. Mystery solved. :)

Still interested in folks' recommendations for a chrom for an intermediate player. These are too expensive to make a buying mistake. Are any of the cheap ones worth trying? I'll search past threads but feel free to share your thoughts of you have any.

The Suzuki SCX 48 , 12 hole is a rad chromatic! This one was a 12 hole bari-tuned one...It may have been an East Top.. The only real criticism I have of it as I'm not really much of a chromatic player is that the wind savers really buzz a lot on the low end.

Are the cheap ones worthwhile?

Depends.

East Top does make decent chromatics that aren't nearly as expensive as the big 3 (Hohner, Suzuki, Seydel) but are robust and well made. But if I A/B an EastTop with, say, a Suzuki Sirius or Hohner Super 64X, I can hear that it doesn't deliver as much power. Even the more economical Suzuki SCX-48 has a very slight edge, but Suzuki doesn't make a tenor (which is what Jason is playing, not a bari, which would be an octave lower than a 64 or a 12-hole tenor).

On the other hand, Swan makes even cheaper chromatics. But I've seen some with unrepairable flaws, impossible to play and impossible to fix. I'm told that their quality has improved, but even the playable ones I've tried were way, way, behind East Top in delivering good sound.

By the way, I get valve (windsaver) growl on the low end on pretty much all my 64s -it's part of the sound. It can sound a harmonic that's an octave lower than the note. Some electronic accordions actually let you dial in valve growl.

@WinslowYerxa Thanks for this info. I don't have anything to compare my 64 to, so I thought the buzzing was "broken", but honestly, I kind of like it sometimes. Maybe I should try embracing it and see where that leads me. It really is an awesome instrument. I might look at the Eastops for additional keys. Thinking since I have C and G covered, Bb and F might be next on my list?

I've had my Eastop 16 holer for a year and a half now and am very happy with it.I've played it a lot and had no real problems. Like Winslow said,not as much volume as a 64X,but that doesn't bother me much.

My early Chro's were 270's and I never got the hang of them. Chrometta was what I actually began to learn on and they were pretty good for a cheap harmonica. Didn't last long.
Hering 5148/7148 became my go to for a couple of years but getting parts was too much a hassle. I do still have and play a Hering Baritono C and it's going strong after at least 7 years.
I got a Suzuki SCX48 in G which plays well and I like a lot.
A friend gave me a Hohner Chromonica II a couple years ago and I use it sometimes but it's a bit tight for me.
I even bought- for a great deal- a Bushman chromatic, Free Jazz, when he was blowing them out after they kind of flopped for him. I think it's a Hering with different covers. Tight upper end.

So I'm kind of all over the place with chromatics.

Rockin Ron's has a Seydel Chromatic Standard for about $75.00. It's a 12 hole chromatic, but without wind savers. I bought one and it really pulls through nicely. It's way better than the Swan 1040 I own, & gives my Discovery 48 nice competition. Still not as fancy as my SCX-48, but for the price,, it holds it own nicely.

Recently got a Swan 1040 as well, for 20$ including shipping. I was surprised at how loud it plays without windsavers. When I opened it I discovered that it has a separate chamber for every reed. I don't know if all 1040s are made like this, but I consider mine very good value for the money.

Even though hering harmonicas and parts are harder to get now,they are still amongst my favorites.

Also,chromatics made with hering and hohner parts mixed together can be fantastic.

I particularly like hering xx48's with hohner 270 covers and mouthpieces.

@shakeylee
I prefer the Hering mouthpieces. I would be happy to trade Hohner for Hering mouthpieces from my 270s.

I showed the characters to a native speaker.

The characters appear to be mutilated after I post. (Yay - fixed with http://www.pinyin.info/tools/converter/chars2uninumbers.html)

The tones are kai1 tuo4 zhe3 (level, falling, rising/falling)

kāituòzhě is supposed to be the pinyin with tone markings.

开拓者 simplified, 開拓者 traditional

口琴 = harmonica

If you search for that then it looks like an Easttop model. I too lazy to remember how to post image links but here's an example:

Edited to add: maybe a match at Amazon? https://www.amazon.com/Easttop-Dreamer-T12-48S-Chromatic-Harmonica/dp/B01H13ZWVU
