We will have two prototypes available for try out/testing/review out at SPAH 2017! They will not be the finished product, final materials will be different however they will have the proper dimensions and most likely the final shape. Your'e feedback will help determine that. The element and sound of the mic will be the same as the one's (current prototype) I have been using exclusively on all my gigs and recordings now for over a year. The mic will be available for sale before or just after 2018.

i presume it has a high impedance transformer built in, so an adapter is not necessary?

We're going to have high and low impedance models. We haven't decided on the grill design yet, but these shapes have been finalized. And, of course, the hard part is over. We have a great sounding element.

What type of cable connection for the hi-z model? Personally, I prefer screw on for hi-z.

What can you tell us about th element?

I'm not sure wether we'll be doing the screw on or the 1/4" in or both we certainly appreciate this kind of feedback! As far as the grill only one will make the cut...Due out before or just after 2018. What Ya'll think? What should we call her? The Moon Cat Mic? The Catawauler? The Moon Mic? Wolf Mic? Magick Wand? I like Michael Rubin's :" Meowcrophone"! Were still experimenting with the grill. The colors will be different. The element is the same as I have been using on all my recordings, shows and youtube videos etc for the past year...

Thanks, Jason. FWIW, I like the grill with the vents in the top picture better than the other one.

I know you prefer modern technology (and in general so do I), but the reasons I like screw on connectors for hi-z mics are: 1) it's easier to tell mics (and cables) apart if you have the same model mic in both hi-z and lo-z. 2) There is no standard way to wire an XLR mic jack for hi-z, so cables are not as easy to find AND, it is much easier to get high end high quality hi-z mic cable in a screw on configuration than in some XLR who knows what pin is hot and whether it is right for this particular mic configuration. 3) using a quarter inch jack to connect to the mic lengthens the mic and is not durable. 4) many harp players already have mic cables with a screw on connector but if they have a hi-z mic cable with an XLR style connector it may or may not be wired compatible with the hi-z Howlin' Cat mic or Howlin' at the Moon mic Moon Cat's Meow Mic or whatever you decide to call it. FWIW

Jason, I think that "MoonCat microphone" or "MoonCat harp mic" is a good name. If you make the name too hokey or jokey of a name, you'll get sick of it real quick, and the product will be around for a long time. As MoonCat is your screen name and used by you all the time to refer to yourself, it identifies the mic as being associated with you without having to say the overly-long "Jason Ricci signature model harmonica microphone".

I would consider doing a high-quality 1/4" input (the ones that are fully enclosed, like the end jack in a Gibson guitar) over the screw-on connector. The enclosed nature of the 1/4" guitar end pin jack will keep dust or debris from getting into the mic and they hold quite securely.

Also, ninety percent of people that use the screw-on connector also wind up using the Switchcraft adaptor, and for the life of me I don't get why. I've heard people say "well, with the screw-on connector you can't accidentally pull the jack out if you step on the cord," but I think that's a lame reason. I just can't see how the screw-on connector protects people from accidentally pulling the cable out when most of the same people use an adaptor that lets the cable be pulled out. Personally, I think the screw-on connector is stupid. If you screw it on too hard, you can damage the connector.

I reckon you just know people who can't be bothered getting special leads Cliffy.
100 % of harp players in my band use them and don't use the adaptor. I have 3 adaptors because I bought mics that had screw ons and I thought that was gonna be a massive pita, but over time I found the reverse.
I always carry one in case of lead failure but that's the only time I use it.
Don't like phono plugs on mics. Xlr is the way to go if not using screw on

The high impedance model will have a standard 1/4" jack like those found on a guitar, not an XLR jack.

Which design is better for cupping. I would imagine the solid. So that would be my choice for the design. Big fan of 1/4 inch switchcraft connectors for what it's worth.

I would not necessarily agree that the solid grll design is "better" for cuppimg. I suspect the vented grill would enable a player who knows what he is doing to get more variations in tone/timbre by altering grip technique.

If the 1/4" version plays well with guitar wireless units, I am double intrigued. The Samson 77 XLR is discontinued, and there aren't many nice looking options for using a dynamic mic and wireless with volume control.

I much prefer the look of the bottom pic, but maybe the bottom one has more tonal variation due to the side vents?

Any plans for a nice, short, lightweight wireless add on? How about calling it the "Mooncat Howler"? Hvyi makes a good point about cupping variances. I see Jason use variances in cupping to great effect.

How about this catchy ad slogan. "The new Mooncat Howler, it howls and growls what come out yo jowls".

Hey guys thanks for the interest! Testing will decide but I have been using a version of this mic similar to the vented one. In the past I have messed around with taping off 57's and bulletizers etc and I have never found those things/methods to be as variable tonally, warm or as natural sounding as a simple unassuaged vented, dynamic cardoid element mic. It is my suspicion, much to the dismay of Lone Wolf,
(as it will cost more than the nonvented grill) that the vented mic to make will win out....However that remains my suspicion....
There are no plans for a wireless, this project alone has consumed much time, money and a ton of work has gone into it on everyone's part starting quite a while ago. We are a small company still.
More will be revealed for sure!
