Well, it's August. Over half the year has gone by. A thought came into my mind recently. Since the Christmas season will be here before we know it, bone up on some popular songs for the holiday season. Speak to the owner of an establishment such as a gas station. If it's cool with him, sit around and play some songs as customers come in for gas in their cars. And especially if a Dunkin Donuts is in the area. Tell the owner that if he gives approval, tips are split 50/50. Fifty percent to you, & fifty percent to the owner for giving you the opportunity to play. I'm sure with that verbal agreement, there shouldn't be any reason for him to refuse.

I was thinking of doing this, but not to make money for me. The thought was that I might sit in with the bell ringer at a Salvation Army Christmas bucket. Maybe it would bring in a few more donations.

Contrariwise, people might empty their wallets in the hope I would stop. Win-Win either way

I thought about doing the salvation army bucket like Rontana mentioned. Always seems like a great idea but then I never do it. Maybe I should start working up a song list now.

A gas station seems like an unusual choice. I'd think most people would be in a hurry there, although I guess it depends on the foot traffic. I may just be used to suburban/rural gas stations. Ideally I think you want someplace where your being there might actually draw people in. In the summer that's outdoor cafes and such. Places like that you might get to keep 100% or your take if you are playing for yourself. Playing for charity most owners would probably give up their 50%, I'd think.

I'm not real experienced at getting shows, but I think I'd put together a demo and see if anyplace will let you play for tips. If it looks like a really good spot and they won't, maybe then offer to cut them in, but ideally you draw customers who then spend money there.

If I pulled into a gas station tomorrow, eight days into August, and somebody was sitting there playing jingle bells or Rudolph on a harmonica, I think I might throw something at 'em. Maybe a jug of wiper fluid...... a can of motor oil. Something. Just sayin...........
