Hey Gang,

Last week I was a part of the blowout to the Midwest Harmonica Workshop. This event aligned with the Lower Town Blues Festival in the Cities.

Below are two vids that might be of interest if you dig stuff outside of the blues realm (there is a fair amount of effects use too). The first vid is particularly special to me as it includes my teacher and friend, Clint Hoover. He is an amazing talent and right up there with the top players in the world.

Feelin' Alright with Clint Hoover

Hey Joe

***Just a note that Hey Joe was the first tune I did and the sound guy didn't adjust my FOH channel until a few moments into the intro.

Just saw these pop up on your YouTube channel. Great stuff! I really enjoyed both songs, but Hey Joe was especially nice to hear. I'm typically more of a traditional blues player, but my local jam is mostly full of guitar heavy stuff like Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, etc. I'm trying to learn more rock stuff. Your lessons and other YT vids have really helped a lot!

Sounding good Mike. I liked the vocals too. Feellin' Alright is one of my favorite songs to sing. Then again, I'm a big Joe Cocker fan.
I liked both these performances. Harp and vocals.

Thanks, guys. I was hoping for better audio than my phone, but my Zoom recorder wasn't working.

Then, the host switched drummers for just my set (not sure why), and the sound guy forgot to adjust my levels when I started playing. I think I played it cool though, lol.

Clint Hoover is an absolute monster harp player. I already knew this, but the world needs more Clint.

When I hear "Feelin' Alright" I always think of the original Dave Mason/Traffic version, though I always liked the Cocker cover.

Mike, as expected, your playing is great, and having Clint Hoover join in put the icing on the cake. Clint is fantastic! SPAH 2010 in Minneapolis was where I first heard you play (at Famous Dave's, I think), and that blowout on Tuesday was amazing. One of the features of SPAH I enjoy is that they always want to include local players in some shows, players that most people would not hear in person unless you live nearby.

Your B3 synth sounded good and you comped well organ style during the guitar solo. Great job on both "Feelin' Alright" and on "Hey, Joe", where I noticed you showed some Popper influence.

Thanks for posting!

Thanks so much, Doug! Hopefully SPAH will be in MN some time again soon...and super hopefully (but doubtful) they will ask me to be involved again.

The rotary pedal is a must have, IMO. It lets me do more than just stand there, lol.

Good playing ,Mike! I'm lucky enough to have Clint living in my area. He is seriously under the radar as a harp player. He was in a showcase of local harp players here and blew the crowd away.

Wow. Both videos sounded great. I too liked the vocals in Hey Joe too. I always enjoy good harp and vocals to boot.

Off topic but on topic. These thoughts come from a good place and are no criticism just something to recognize/think about.

A few years back we did Hey Joe at a party and a couple ladies were very upset about the song choice. I never really thought about the lyrics in regards to anybody listening to that song who is a woman and has suffered violence towards them from a man especially at gun point. They left the party and I haven't played that song since. That's all I think about when I hear that song. I understood their point and concern.
