Well it would certainly seem that there is no place here for humor only theoretical talk about an instrument that for the most is self taught by ear(lol) And now I have been formally welcomed to the site which I don't take lightly and feel humbled by the approach. It is at this point I will introduce myself Sharpharp. I began playing 32 years ago at the age of 15 after being introduced to the guitar which I didn't fall in love with. One however a friend of the family (Bob horne) donated a tape by a band called the cheaters.(the sweat it out album) Featuring a song called cars. Upon hearing the harmonica on the track a love was born while has never died. Soon after I was introduced to the dirty blues band (stone dirt album) featuring rod gingerman piazza who to me is better than Paul Butterfield, I say this as they were around at similar times, and I learnt the album note for note. After which came the much debated Paul Jones and I urge you to listen to the tracks can't hold on much longer, hallelujah I love her so, from the ready album and someday baby from the official bootleg blues album for a true example of just how good this guy is, at the same time legendary mark feltham from nine below zero and as a 15 year old listening to the don't point your finger album was an inspiration. Check out the song once twice and that's enough track the harp solo is third position with a d harp.
Nowadays I download as many Jason Ricci vids as I can find for technical inspiration as well as good music and Alex paclin, I like the way he is taking the diatonic away into different styles of music melodic first position for instance take a look at Jason's videos on Arabic scales and see the posibilites which is where I have been going for the past 10 years and maybe the chromatic is my next step. Anyway you can't really complain about this post can you thanks for the love Joe.

Welcome to the forum. Humor is, of course, subjective. I think, combined with starting so many new threads you overwhelmed the membership some.

One unwritten (maybe it should be written) rule is to try not to start a new thread to talk about an old thread (the exception being when you don't want to threadjack the other thread). I think we could have minimized the disruption if we'd kept things in one thread. One of the problems with our style of forum software is that the thread at the top of the page is always the last one commented on, which means new threads necessarily push old threads off the front page.

Admin hat off, I think some of your posts provoked some fun responses. I should have stepped in sooner to teach you the ropes, particularly concerning starting new threads though.

It sounds like you've picked some good players as influences. I picked up the harmonica because I hadn't had much luck with other instruments. I've got wrist issues which basically prevented me from getting far with guitar or piano. I only really picked up harmonica because I needed something I could find pitches with... then I stumbled onto one of Jason's videos and realized 'Wow, harmonica can make the noises I want to play'. Of course, 10 years later, I can only get the harmonica to play a very small sliver of what Jason can play, but I have fun with it!

So, again, welcome to the forum. If you have any questions about posting, adding videos, anything like that, feel free to ask me.

Damn, I was distracted on FB & Ebay and missed the whole controversy. And apparently, there's some kind or etiquette to this forum? All this time, I thought it was just a herd of cats.

i have been playing 50 plus years, sharpharp, have a reputation of being a pretty good player, but i've never seen the need to go online and act like a preening, boastful oaf. i suspect you're putting us on and think you're pulling an Andy Kaufman performance art ruse, but the evidence here points less to a nuanced meta commentary than it does to a disturbing lack of depth and character. really, friend, you've played the one riff you know. it's time to get off the bandstand.

Ted is it necessary to denigrate the talent of an individual whose talent level is beyond reproach. sharpharp is very talented and many of us consider him to be The Best. That doesn't take anything away from your talent level.

Read what I wrote again and notice that I am talking about his riffing on a joke that became old . I wasn't talking about his musicianship, which may or may not be considerable. He has posted no videos or audio examples, though, so it remains speculation at best.

SharpHarp only needs one riff because that riff is The Best.

I think we need to stop bullying him. His professionalism, his extensive playing experience, and his prodigious musicianship is something that we can all learn from. I hope that SharpHarp has not soured on the forum due to this experience, as I look forward to reading many more tips from him and hearing the stories of his blues performances.

rats. I was going for that title, but I now bow to the Master.

btw, don't worry about one or two here who post negatively - we had to hire them, you see, because - Every Party has a Party Pooper.

I've spent this fine Sunday morning listening to David Johansen's Mansion of Fun radio show. He's a great musicologist - and an underrated harmonica player. My wife & I will be heading off to the beach in an hour when the show ends at noon. It's a 2 block walk. There's a green flag, and the water temp is 70. Air temp in low 80s. Perfect. Of course I'll have my C Harp. I'm learning St. Louis Blues these days. Tricky, but fun. Definitely won't have a phone or iPad. Can you imagine being at mother ocean with your girl (and yer Harp!) and giving a crap what's getting tweeted or posted on the web?!?!?

Time to warm up. I am heading off to a Biker Bar on this fine 102 degree Sunday afternoon. They have a blues band playing there, and since most the audience is tone deaf from too many years of loud pipes, they seem to think I'm a pretty sharp harp myself. When I've stuck enough reeds with Shiner Bock, it will be time to come home.

SunDancer, we're headed to the beach soon as well. WE may be a bit north or west of you- Klamath CA. Unlike a lot of players I don't take a harp along when I go places, unless there may be a chance to sit in with someone. I WILL take my case when we go to promote, since sometimes a challenge is set down. We will do an audition if asked.

We're hoping to see some gray whales, seals, pelicans, and maybe seahawks. Temp is about 67.

Sharpharp, with decades under your belt I would imagine you know some stuff. You may have "socially" got off on a wrong foot here but you can recover. You've taken some ribbing, maybe well deserved although I seldom follow that kind of thing here.
Why not put a link up? See the bottom of my post. I may not be the usual harp guy but I assure you I know some stuff too-45 years effort- and I am having the time of my life thanks to harmonica and an excellent guitar partner!

Jbone - I'm down in Laguna. Conditions were superb today. We had green flag waves, which were great for a mediocre swimmer like me. And I try to minimise my sun exposure as I had a couple melanomas cut out in 2010. I'm hoping I made some progress on St. Louis Blues under the umbrella.

Did you see any whales up in Klamath?

Saw some spouts. It's an ongoing adventure. One guy who camped here a couple weeks back saw one right off the shore, 30 feet out. That's what I'm hoping for since my lil camera doesn't do distance well.
