My takeaway from what she is describing is that, when you play off of chord tones, you are freer to include notes not included in the scale of that chord - approaching from 1/2 step above, etc.

Scale patterns pretty much stick to the notes within the scale, so you don't go "outside" hardly ever, if at all. As musical ideas, they become more predictable.

Love Carol Kaye. There's a great documentary on The Wrecking Crew on Netflix, or at least there was i'm not sure if it is still up. Tremendous musicians who should be household names to all music fans, but for the most part are not.

“Don’t let him sit in, he plays scales”

Part of the problem with the harmonica is that it is missing notes, making it difficult
Or impossible to play certain things. . But some of its limitations are what we find appealing.

Some of the best songs are three seventh chords, not a lot of harmonic complexity.
She would be bored stiff playing born in Chicago, we never seem to tire of that classic.

Great stuff. She started as a guitar player and switched to bass, so she was already familiar with the chord notes that were going to be played by the guitar player in a rock ensemble. What a great tip.
