I spent three salivating the ACE chromatic being heavily advertised.

I played it at SPAH 2016 with both brass and wood inserts. It was a great harp.

The Hohner rep warned me the wood inserts would not be included if I didn't buy right then.

That would be okay, I thought. How much more could they be?

About 6 months ago I bought the ACE for $700, more than I have ever spent on a chromatic.

To its credit, it plays and sounds wonderful.

I contacted Hohner. How much are the wood inserts.

$150.

Shock.

But we don't have any right now.

Oh. When are you going to get some?

No plans for the near future.

To me, if I spend $700 on a harp, it should do my taxes. Needless to say, I am frustrated with Hohner.

If you or anyone you know has a similar story, I have good news.

Tom Halchak of Blue Moon Harmonicas is creating some wood inserts. He make use more than one type of wood.

He is not going to make a large batch, but they should be available for sale at SPAH. Of course, he ultimately would be able to do lots of different types of woods and metals, if there was a demand.

Thank you Tom!

Last I heard, the wood inserts had become available fro Hohner. HAve you talked with their reps recently?

I got to play and hear the ACE with wood and brass inserts, and I could tell which was which by sound alone, as could the people sitting near me.

I can never justify paying $700.00 for any harmonica completely constructed of plastic. Adding $150.00 for a wooden inserts?!?? That's a whopping $850.00. Thanks, but no thanks. I've seen other chroms on the market for less, & IMO, a higher quality at the same time.

Not to get into a pissing contest, but if you have never tried the ACE 48 how can you say that another chrom that you have seen is of a higher quality? I don't have a horse in this race. I didn't make the ACE 48. I don't own one and I am not suggesting that anyone else buy one. I'm only involved in this conversation because Michael asked me if I would be willing to make some wood Sound Wedges for it. But I just don't get how anyone can judge the quality of any product unless they had personal hands-on experience with it. No disrespect meant. Just a rhetorical question.

It is a great harp. I not saying it is the greatest that ever was, but it is a great harp.

I admit to jumping the gun on my view. True, I've never tried the ACE 48. I was probably just getting myself worked up on my opinion. I just tend to have things get under my skin. And even though I was getting worked up over the price, I wasn't even being vocal in the same way about Hohner's Silver Concerto which has an average price of $7,000.00 to $8,500.00. But when someone makes a six figure salary, $8,500.00 is pocket change for them to spend on a musical instrument.
