UCSB Archive - Harmonica Recordings

Seems like a bunch still need to be digitized, which you can sponsor directly to speed up the process. Maybe a good community project for SPAH?

I stumbled on this a few years back. At the time, I didn't find harmonica recordings; thanks for giving this update.

What would SPAH's involvement be?

Interesting to see how many of the harmonica cylinder recordings were home recordings made by erasing (!) commercial wax cylinders, presumably by either melting, shaving, or flattening the wax.

One of those really stands out:

Yes, Sir, Thats My Baby, played on a diatonic-tuned slide harp with full tongue-blocked chording and great rhythm with guitar accompaniment. It's claimed to be two harmonicas, but I only hear one, unless the second one is the discordant notes that come in near the abrupt end of the recording.

Also, I have to wonder at the date of 1972, even though that's clearly stated in the spoken introduction, made in the manner of early 20th century recordings.

When I clicked on some I saw they had not been digitized, but they have a donation program to do it.

“Adopt a Cylinder” Program

It was just a thought, maybe SPAH could promote it more widely to speed it up or something. History and all that...jazz.
