A few days ago I picked up an album, Johnny Young "Chicago Blues". Big Walter, Otis Spahn, and James Cotton are among the featured players. It's good traditional Chicago stuff, I think. I hadn't realized Johnny was a mandolin player and he plays a fair amount here. I've heard it before in a blue grass style, but not this way. Sounds pretty good. Johnny 'Man' Young.

Rich DelGrosso, from Detroit, (currently in LA) was a big promoter of blues mandolin - he wrote columns for acoustic music magazines, was head co-ordinater for Blues Week at Augusta Heritage for many years during its Golden Years and is generally a pretty fun guy.

I do love me some Johnny Young. He's recorded quite a few great blues sides in the traditional ChiTown style and always with fabulous sidemen. DelGrosso resides and is tearing up in Houston nowadays and has some fine recent recording. Gerry Hundt is another fine mandolin player getting it done.

Listen to John Lee'Sonny Boy' Williamson's many sides with Yank Rachell. Yank is all over SBWI's discography. FYI... in later years, Yank played a custom made solid body electric mandolin which only had 4 single strings instead of the 4 doubled-strings. It's a cool sound, either way.
