I normally use my ears to determine a song key. But I recently started a project that got me thinking about software that can detect key.
There are commercial products available but I found this open source (free) software called KeyFinder that worked well.

It can be downloaded for Windows or Mac. It’s small, portable and simple to use. Just drag and drop a list of music files from your PC onto the KeyFinder window, then click Run Batch Analysis.
I just used it to find the key of a 20 song play list. KeyFinder correctly found 19 out of 20 keys, in about 10 seconds. The one it missed was for a 3 minute song with 5 key changes.
KeyFinder reportedly handles the following file types: WAV, MP3, MP4, and M4A, WMA, FLAC, AIF, AIFF. I don’t know much more except it has some settings that I did not try like renaming the files… I also noticed the Windows version states there is an updated available (false popup).
I thought it might come in handy for other folks.

I use it all the time, e.g. When I'm in the car listening to a blues tune on the radio and want to play along. I've got the app on my phone. It's spot on most of the time. But when I'm playing at a jam it's just easier to ask the lead.

I'll have to look into that. I used to have a plugin for Windows Media Player that I used, but they stopped updating it a couple versions back.

I have tried the Windows version...the first test seemed to work as expected. It is not something to pull out at a jam but fine for the woodshed practice.
It has some features that look like it will add the key to you songs attributes if you have that set up in your media player.
You can batch a whole folder of songs at once too.
