My phone versions don't seem to do what I need. That is likely my fault but I'm thinking a decent tuner will help. Other than just doing good maintenance the impetus for this is actually the low price of some Easttop harps that I'd change to crossover compromise.
Thanks

If you go to the Peterson tuners website, they have the Istrobosoft software package that's excellent and one of the sweetened settings they have are specifically for harmonicas. They have the phone versions, but the one for Android phones isn't anywhere near as good as the one for the Iphone. The Istrobosoft package also allows you to set up your own tunings as well.

Thanks Bob. So the sweetened tunings look interesting. I confess to needing something fool proof and there's potential here. The sweetened tunings don't include the Crossover compromise but they do have the Marine Band.
Any idea what they mean when the list all says "in C" ? I would assume I'd change the settings for another key but...?

Original Marine Band Tuning for Harmonica in C
MMB
Modern Marine Band Tuning for Harmonica in C
MSR

I have the Stroboplus hd digital tuner. Its only 120 on amazon right now and it does everything I need it to. It also has all the tunings that you listed in your last post.

I found this elsewhere, indirectly from Petereson.
“The app will *not* automatically transpose the key. iStroboSoft features a transposition setting that will need to manually be adjusted before tuning. Each position represents one half-step.” “Since the Sweetened setting is rooted in C and there is no root control present, if tuning a harmonica not in C, you will need to transpose the key to have the tuner adjust. The display will always read out like you're tuning a C harmonica, however. The transpose setting is simply a way to "trick" the app into doing what you need. Example, if tuning an "A" harmonica, set the transpose setting to TRANS -3 (Key: A). This will adjust iStroboSoft for this key and carry the respective Sweetened preset offsets with it. After transposing to the correct key, tune as you would normally.”

So -3 is three half steps down (C-B-Bflat-A).
Yes?
Kinda clunky but if it works it would be pretty nice if it's the only adjustment you have to make.

On a slightly different topic about tuners. I picked up on on sale that has a microphone intended to clip on the bell of a wind instrument with it. It really helps to be able to check the tuning (or find out what key that harp is in the dark before you blow into the PA) in a noisy setting. I also use it to find out what key the band is in by singing the tonic into the mike. With a normal tuner you cant see it when it is close enough to your harp or mouth to register in a noisy room.

@Littoral -- If you go to a list of tunings I have on this site, and to get there, go to harmonicas for sale, and then click on harmonica tunings and you can download the tuning formulas in a PDF form right there. You can also enter this information if you get the IStrobosoft package and it will allow you to enter it and save it as a custom tuning. You can also do this with the Strobo Plus as well and if I were you, at $120 at Amazon.com, I get on the stick and buy it ASAP!!!!!

@STME58 -- The old Conn Strobotuners used to have a separate mic and Jerry Portnoy for a time used these as a harp mic (and he was selling them as well), and you may find these on EBay, but they were bought out by Peterson many years ago.

Thanks BBQ, this is perfect. I did pull the trigger on the STROBOPLUS HD. All this is a long ways from the early Cambridge Harmonica Orchestra days.

BBQ Bob, I can remember as a member of a high school marching band in the 70's lining up to blow a Bb into the StroboTuner. That thing was a fascinating as the other newfangled device one of my classmates had, a $400 early example of the calculator! A few years later, the functionality of both devices could be carried in your pocket without a large impact to your pocketbook.

I tried using the clip on tuning mic as an input to an amplifier but it did not work so well. I was trying to help my son's amplify his bassoon, Paul Hansen style, but neither of us were impressed with the results. It didn't work to amplify his saxophone either.

G'day all.
I remember someone, on a thread here discussing tuners, mention that one particular tuner would read the difference tone.
Does anyone remember what brand and model that tuner was?

Thanks. Michael

Strobotuner HD, round 1. Got a quick start yesterday with a Special 20. Easy enough. 2 notes out. Octave final adjustment. Sweet.
Also using Andrews basic tool kit. Nice.
I'll pursue some more challenging tuning soon.

Bob,
Thank you for sharing the tuning .pfd
I've been using it along with a Android app "Clear Tunes" ($3.99). That combo, and my ears, has been working well for me.

Steve,
"I can remember as a member of a high school marching band in the 70's lining up to blow a Bb into the StroboTuner." That cracked me up... Ditto -space age-
