Just thinking about a low output at home amp. Question is: Is a Kalamazoo louder than a champ(because of the 10"vs 8" speaker)? Quieter the better for me.
I have heard and liked clips of both with harp. I know how loud a Champ is but have never heard a Kalamazoo in person.
Thanks.

yes i'd expect it to project better.
but that's about how loud you can go; its the low volume you're interested in.
i reckon there wouldn't be much in it, but they'll both be too loud for use at home if you have to worry about it

You may well be right about the volume being a bit loud. I was considering a small tube amp to get a nice tube tone but at fairly low volume. I have been using a little 7 what solid state Yamaha amp that sounds reasonable but just kicking around the idea of something small with tubes.
I actually have a tweed deluxe, and a number of larger amps(being foremost a guitar player) but they are loud and have 12" speakers.
I might not get to turn up a champ loud enough to get it to break up a little without being too loud for the level I like to play at.
Maybe I should try and borrow a champ or rent one to get an idea if it's even worth considering.
It's good to get someone else's perspective.
Thanks.

There are a few options. You could get any standard 5 watt amp and then buy an attenuator to get that good breakup at a lower volume.

Or another option .. the Vox ac4tv line comes with a built in attenuator. I have a Vox ac4tv mini and I really love it. It gets great tube tone at lower volumes. And you get different colorations at the different wattage settings. I also change out the preamp tubes to lower gain. Both 5751 and 12au7 sound really good. The 12au7 will really lower your volume alot, to the point where you can crank it up alot higher. You ll lose the honk, but ... it's still a nice warm sound.

I have owned both a Silverface Champ and a Kalamazoo Model 1 (still own the 'Zoo). They're both nice amps for harp, and I would say the Kalamazoo sounds more powerful, bassier, and somewhat louder although I put a new 10A125O speaker in my Kalamazoo, and that certainly helped it vs. the stock speaker. However, the Champ still sounds great and gives you more tone controls. So you really can't go wrong with either option I would say.

I'd say a Kalamazoo is a little louder than a Champ. If you want a quieter-still amp - look for a vintage tube amp with a 6" speaker.

Also consider a VHT Special 6. It has a 0.5 watt and full 6 watt setting. Good tube amp for harp. Search the site here as there is lots of info about these amps.
