I was sitting in my living room this evening and I heard the smooth snick, click of a precision mechanism being assembled. As someone who occasionally uses firearms, this was a recognizable sound and a bit disconcerting in this context. Out of the corner of my eye I could perceive a person standing off to the side with a long barreled large caliber ...............bassoon. My son then took it upstairs to practice.

LOL!

Well, it could be worse... his bassoon playing could be so bad that you'd wish it was a gun cocking!... some of those reed instruments can sound pretty rough when you are starting out.

Actually, he plays quite well and I don't mind listening to him at all. He played Alto Sax for about 4 years before starting the bassoon. Right now I am renting a bassoon for him. I would like to buy him one but an intermediate level bassoon costs more than 5 times what a good high power rifle costs!

I found this interesting video that shows how menacing setting up a bassoon can be. (Note the similarity of selecting a reed to selecting the proper harp from ones case.)

Also on line is a video from the US Army on how to set up a bassoon. (Setup and teardown starts at 2:07)

Love the bassoon, an amazing sounding instrument.

Big fan of low instruments in general, contrabassoon, bass clarinet, tuba, double bass, and of course low harps.
