OK, I'm running a stock Peavey115 cab with a Masco MA-60. What performance difference can I expect when trying to choose between a 150 and 250 watt speaker? All experience welcome... Just don't tell me to install 4 10" Webers. Not happening.

"What performance difference can I expect when trying to choose between a 150 and 250 watt speaker?"

The watts of the speaker does not mean anything, size and the the model specs are important, but more important is the sound. If you like it, great, if not, then try another.

2x10 is great, really full. Especially if you mix speakers.

hope it helps.

1847, No it doesn't. I was looking at Eminence and Celestion. Willing to look further. Do like the 15" though. Also thinking alnico might be a better way to go than ceramic.

It'll be harder to saturate higher wattage speakers. Whether or not that's a bad thing is a matter of personal taste.

Thanks Nathan, Just started looking at the Weber Cali 15. Pricey but at 60 watts may be the better way to go? Time to start saving. :o)

the other thing I'm finding on Ebay are old Rola almico's without any wattage specifications. Anybody have any information on those things?

Thanks again!

Forget those old speakers, been there, done that. Get good musical instrument speakers. I'm not a fan of Alnico's, they get lost in the mix too easily due to lower flux density in the air gap. Your running a big amp for a reason. Ceramic speakers give improved punch and clarity.

+1 for rogonzab's post. Good luck...BN

PS: I have a Weber Cali 15 here that is not in use. My info is in my profile if you are interested.

Seems like discussions on guitar speakers are always accompanied by some well meaning but inaccurate, or at least unclear, information, particularly regarding wattage and speaker break-up. There's plenty good info in this article. The folks at Celestion should know what they're talking about.

Hello Georgia Blues, here is a related question I posed in another forum in 2009:

"What is the effect of mismatching the power of an amp and the power handling capability of its speakers? Assume the impedance has been correctly matched, e.g. 8 ohms/8 ohms. But what happens when you match a 100 watt amp head with a speaker capable of handling only 30 watts? Or do the opposite, match a 30 watt amp head with a speaker capable of handling 100 watts? I'm interested in three issues for each kind of mismatch:

Scenario 1 - Powerful amp, weak speaker(s). Anybody got thoughts on these questions:

a. Potential damage to speaker(s)
b. Potential damage to the amp
c. Effect on the ultimate sound

Scenario 2 - Weak amp, powerful speaker(s). Anybody got thoughts on these questions:

d. Potential damage to speaker(s)
e. Potential damage to the amp
f. Effect on the ultimate sound

Until I started looking more deeply into this issue, I thought the idea was to match, as closely as possible, the power of the amp with its speaker's power handling capabilities. Now I'm learning that's not necessarily true. Help me out!"

Here is the succinct answer I got from Bruce of Mission Amps:

1, A, B and C
2, F

Bottom line, don't feed a powerful amp into a weak speaker. Bruce's answer didn't deal with the qualitative effect on the sound, but I posted this thread as a reminder to be careful when experimenting with speakers.

You can read the entire thread here (there are more answers and discussion):

i was surprised to find out the old jensens were only rated at 9 watts.

i was also surprised how well the 75 watt speaker sounds that i put in my bassman.
