Somebody recently posted a whole set from a show at NYC's Manny's Car Wash back in 1998. I played three or four songs with the late Bill Perry and his big band featuring Jimmy Vivino and the Uptown Horns.

I was playing through a vocal mic, which presents its own challenges. I feel as though I'm watching a different player, not my present-day self--and I can't find much fault with what he's doing. Sometimes he's doubling the horns; sometimes he's doubling the second guitar; sometimes he's just playing harp fills. To me, that IS the challenge of playing in this sort of context. That and not overplaying.

Needless to say, this is without any rehearsal. I'm just feeling it as I go.

The second song, around 23:00, is a medium shuffle. That's where I'd start if you're interested in checking this out. My stylistic debt to Cotton is evident! I'm having a harder time with the overblows than I do these days. I take one solo early, one solo later on, in the shuffle track. A funk track starts around the 29:30 point, and there I sink back into the horn section:

i have a better idea... start at the very beginning
roll out some pizza dough, fire up your "easy bake" oven
pour a glass of wine, and enjoy yourself.
