Just wondering about how people line up the band on stage.
If the bass is to the left of the drummer, do you set up next to the bass or the other side of the kit?
I think I used to set up on the side away from the bass. Last gig I was next to the bass and really struggling to hear at times. I use a big amp. On the songs I was leading I could hear no problem but on some others I felt the bass was drowning my amp.
Gig before was a bit that way except I was in front of the kit and my amp off to right somewhere.
It's been a couple of years but I'm pretty sure I used to set up on the right, with the guitarist on the left with the bass.

Some stages are narrow front to back, some are deep. This will affect the available stage layouts. On a stage with little depth you have to line up almost side to side. If there is depth, drums to the back, unless the drummer sings lead.

The rhythm section should be together.

The rest of the stage depends on the instrumentation and who is fronting the band. Singers in the center. Sidemen on the sides. I prefer being closer to the guitar than the bass.

Oh, if you are using a substitute on bass, they need to be able to see the guitar.

I have timing issues (to be polite whit myself) and I always try to be next to he bass amp. That helps me a lot.

Also, If I can get away whit it, I put my amp in the other side of the stage in order to minimize fB issues. Sometimes it work, sometimes not. But when it does, you can get much more volume.

On most of the gigs I play I'm usually a featured soloist. So, if I am functioning as an alternative solo instrument to a guitar, my preference is to be across the stage on the side opposite from the guitar player so I have a good view of him and can watch what he is doing. If I am primarily working off the singer I want to be where I keep him or her in view so I don't miss cues. If there is a keyboard, it's helpful for me to be able to watch the keyboard player's hands but stage alignment doesn't usually permit that.

Every venue is different so far as what you can hear wherever you are standing. What is a good position for being able to hear on one stage may be a terrible position to hear in on a different stage. However, generally speaking, you can almost always hear the guitar(s) no matter where you are positioned.

So, my preference regarding stage position is relative to what I can SEE rather than what I can hear. FWIW

Drums and bass in the middle. I'm on the right and our guitar is on the other side. That's it unless we have a guest and they are usually next to the guitar.

Yeah I am also on the front 50% of the time, so can't really fit into a cosy spot on the side and just watch others all the time. I need a spot that works for the time I am the front.
Most of these stages don't have a lot of depth, not really practical to stand right in front of the kit.
Bass player sits angled toward the drummer, so I'm either out further on the bass side or over on the right of the drummer.
kind of depends where the drums set up, whether there is more space one side or the other, or in front.
But it's looking like getting away from the bass is preferable.
