Yes UK, Oxford , home of university learning,

My friend opening his front door, bashed on the head and then fighting for his life against a meth fueled maniac.

He is ok, despite being 65 he is a martial arts practicioner and by screaming and kicking the guy ran away

Good harp player and singer, lives to fight another day, take care all

It's good to hear he's okay!

If you don't mind my asking, what part of town does he live in? (Just curious because I lived there for a couple of years in the '70s.)

Hope he heals quickly.

Personally I prefer to be insured by Mr Smith and Mr Wesson. The goblins dont get to run away and terrorize others so easily

I hope the healing goes smoothly, quickly and completely. I also hope the assailant is permanently rendered harmless.

@Goldbrick - I'm a big fan of S&W and the like but they are no defense against a cheap shot and the like.

I just read this. That kind of crap really touches a nerve with me.

I am a firm subscriber to the forced karmic payment theory. Christian forgiveness notwithstanding, there is nothing like payback.

My thoughts go out to your friend.

Sorry to hear about your friend. It doesn't surprise me at all though. Most people have a ridiculous rose coloured view of Oxford because of the Universities. The reality is that just like any other city in the world. It has many poor areas, many social problems and is crime ridden. Having been born and brought up there, I'm under no such illusions about it being a 'nice' place.

Rather different gun laws in the UK compared to US.

When I lived in Wales, late one night I'd come home from a gig and was having some food when I heard the sound of breaking glass. I went outside and the driving lights on my car had been smashed. I lived on a very steep incline cobblestone street that was very poorly lit. We'd had problems with kids. When I looked towards the bottom of the hill I saw these two shapes and thought that's what it was, kids, so I went after them. Unfortunately, it turned out they were two lads from the local rugby team who'd been getting polluted after a match. They caused a rukus, going across tables to attack some girl, and were thrown out of our local pub just before I ran into them.

Not knowing this at the time, I got to the bottom of the road where it turned sharp around a stone wall. As I got there they came back around and jumped me in the dark. I went down, and thinking someone would put the boot in, went into a fetal position with my arms protecting my sides. Sure enough, a kick comes in but kind of lame. I thought to myself, "Hell, if that's the best they can do I can win this." I managed to get to my feet. Because they were really drunk, and more by accident than design, I managed to put one guy head first into the stone wall and the other guy tripped over a step and went head first into another stone wall. Seeing I was the only one standing I beat a hasty retreat, went back to the house, and called the cops.

As luck would have it, when the squad car pulled out from the cop shop the two idiots were right in front of them. They were arrested and spent the night in cells, apparently after a trip to emergency. One guy broke his ankle and the other cracked his skull a bit.

When it came time for their court date myself and my neighbor, despite the fact she had seen nothing, were summoned to court as witnesses. We sat outside the courtroom for hours. My neighbor had to take time off from work as well. Eventually this prosecutor showed up and handed me some crumpled bills and pocket change. When i asked what that was about I was told it was my compensation and that they had been bound over for 1 year. Kind of a suspended sentence. The money amounted to 5 British pounds and some change. I was pissed. As mad about that as the original incident.

When I went to the pub for lunch the day after the run in I found out about the girl being attacked, the idiots being thrown out, and about their injuries. The landlord had heard about the scrap from the lads that morning, "Some crazy American attacked us!" Landlord commented that I didn't have a mark on me. I actually hurt like hell all over, as one does.

Epilogue: I was middle weight champion of our village for the rest of the week and the father of the girl who'd been jumped insisted on buying me shots the next time I went down to my local for a drink. I was a bit embarrassed since I didn't exactly show up on a white horse but hey, he was grateful and who am I to turn down free booze.
