This is very cool. A serious undertaking,- you pulled it off really well. I have to listen in stereo later to hear you more in the 'Left Channel'. Low Eb?? Got an Eb harp - but low Eb? You've got a bigger harp case than me I guess. Very nice work. ---------- Bone's music videos
I'm a HUGE Bill Jennings fan and I certainly steal plenty of his stuff and play it on harmonica. Many jazz and jump blues guitar players, what they were basically doing were imitating horns and that's also along the lines of what Little Walter Jacobs had been doing for quite sometime.
I REALLY DIG what you're doing here, Wheel, and compliments are something I NEVER hand out to anyone easily. Your intonation and articulation is nicely spot on here. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
bonedog569, thank you so much! Low Eb is my favourite harmonica for jazzy-blues or bluesy-jazz. A lot of standards suit it very good.
barbequebob, thank you so much! I love Bill Jennings too. I love all of his solo recordings, with McDuff, Leo Parker or Willis Jackson. He and Grant Green are two of my all time favourites jazz guitarists. I never knew how cool is his phrasing until I started to transcribe his solos. A bible for any musician.
kudzurunner , thank you so much, Adam! I really appreciate your words!
Killa_Hertz , thank you soooo much! You know in this video I did not use any special effects. I just tried to find right register for sax or guitar in every particular phrase. This video was recorded with harp break, t-rex reptile delay and lone wolf reverb.
Very Cool. It didnt sound like you had anything special going on. (modulation, etc.) But i was just curious how you shaped your sound to get that nice Sax Tone.
I have a Low Eb. So I'm going to try to add some simple effects as you did. I cant play anywhere close to as well as you, but I would like to be able to atleast find something close to that sound you have there. Thanks for giving me something Awesome to shoot for. Always Enjoy Your Playing. ----------
@wheel -- Bill Jennings is a HUGE influence for many blues guitarists, especially in the jump/swing school of playing and three guitarists I know personally have all said they're heavily influenced by him are Duke Robillard, Junior Watson and Charlie Baty. He's also done some great sideman work as well with people like Louis Jordan, Roy Brown and Bill Doggett.
Here's two of his recordings as a sideman below:
Here's the Roy Brown original Letter From Home that Wiliam Clarke later covered:
Here he is with Bill Doggett doing Big Boy:
Here's his signature instrumental often covered by many well known jump blues guitar players:
I often use Low Eb a lot as well as Ab harps for doing jump blues stuff, especially horn oriented stuff. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
Killa_Hertz , thank you so much! I think slow wah-wah with bullet mic can make harmonica sound little softer and closer to the horns.
Jason, thank you so much for all your attention to my playing!
barbequebob, yes I hear a lot of Bill's phrases in Junior Watson playing. The way he approaches sound of guitar, builds tension makes him my favourite too. I did not knew that it was Bill on Roy Brown's record. Thank you!
Hi everybody! I made a small 2 min tutorial video for my friends from Ukrainian harmonica school. Video contains some Bill Jennings phrases adapted for harmonica and blues. I choose simple enough phrases that can be played without overblows, valves, alt tuning etc. Bends only! :) I hope someone will find it useful. It played on low Bb harp in 2nd position.
Bob, thank you so much for remind me about Garry! He was the first diatonic harmonica player that I heard who played that kind of music that I love! I also love his versions of Knock Me A kiss, Indiana and Red Top ---------- Konstantin Kolesnichenko(Ukraine) CDBaby Amazon ITunes Google Music my music on youtube
You're swinging the s**t out these two and I don't give out compliments easily. The first one reminded me of the stuff he did on his old Prestige called Glide On. Now lets hear you do another jump blues guitar player who's equally as heavily influential to the jump blues guitar sound, and that's Tiny Grimes, who I'm also a big fan of. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
Thank you so much, Bob! Yes, you are absolutely right. this version of "There will never be another you" is from "Glide on" album. Yes I like Tiny Grimes too. You gave me a good point - I need to work on his style too. thank you again :) Harmonicatunes, thank you so much! I'm glad that you like it :) Rhartt1234 , probably everything that Bill did is worth listening :)
Willis Gator Tail Jackson was also very influential in William Clarke's playing. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
Great playing in the OP, but also this thread has been so informative. Loving the Willis Jackson tracks. ---------- Check out my music at http://bmeyerson11.bandcamp.com/
Whenever I think of Willis Gator Tail Jackson, this is the first thing that comes to mind, his signature tune that he did while he was a member of the Cootie Williams Band, which comes in two parts:
He swings like mad and his tone is seriously off the freaking charts. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
WOW, I'm diggin this! That"s some kinda playin there Wheel. Bb & Eb are two of my favorite keys. I have no low harps in these keys. Hmmm. Very insperational. Thanks...BN
Had to find a non-live version of the song because those videos are blocked in Canada, but I love the composition and changes -- gives me some ideas. Cheers!

Hi everybody. I recorded my new album in August. I think this is my best record to date! It highly influenced by Bill Jennings, Grant Green, William Clarke, Willis Jackson, Jack McDuff, Jimmy Forrest and other my favourite musicians. We played it in organ combo format with swinging guitar, wailing organ and honking harmonica :) It's bluesy-jazz or jazzy-blues and even one bossa-nova-gospel :) Album contains 3 cover songs and 4 my original instrumentals. I hope my record will be available on late september - beginning of October and I really hope that you will like it. Small teaser
Outstanding! I love this stuff that you're doing. May I suggest that you start a new post to bring attention to the new release?
I think you should just post the same thing you posted here today at 4:06 AM, but start a new thread titled, "My New Album Teaser" or something like that....
I think that would direct more people your way.
Look forward to the release date on this. Thanks for making great music.
Back in the early 1980s, before I really knew who Willis Gatortail Jackson was, I stood outside the old West End Bar on 116th and Broadway, across from Columbia U., and listened to Gatortail and his band through the window one night. I always liked his stuff. It's amazing what a journey he takes you on in the first two minutes of that first (Part 1) video.
I met Brother Jack McDuff once or twice in Harlem bars. He always had that funny cap/hat on. Nice guy. I knew and sat in with a few different organ players, including Victor Davis and Jimmy Preacher Robins.
Here's the Preacher at work. I jammed with him half a dozen times. I played one gig with him, a showcase at a club on 125th near the Apollo where we followed violinist Regina Carter:
Once I saw Mama Nuts, B. B. King's old sax player, in a bar on 145th and Broadway. Evelyn.....I can't remember her last name. But I'm sure it was her. A (black) female sax player that good, of that age, was not something you saw very often.
I never saw Stanley Turrentine live, and I regret that. Those old time sax players were a rare and amazing thing.
