I’m taking the summer off – sort of.

Effective immediately, I will not be accepting orders for custom harmonicas until further notice. This may seem a bit odd given that I launched a new website about a week ago and have about 200 brand new harmonicas in stock just waiting to be built. But as I looked over my schedule for this summer I realized that there was no way that I would have the time to build harmonicas. Those of you who have already placed orders with me will have them filled within the next 2-3 weeks so no need to worry. I will still be taking orders for combs. I have plenty of combs in stock and I can usually ship them within 1-3 days. But building harmonicas takes time. After spending pretty much the entire weekend in my shop building harps, I am still about three weeks behind. The kids are out of school for the summer. I have three different week-long trips planned, including SPAH. Two of my boys are moving out of town to go off to college so I would like to spend some time with them. The long and the short of it is if you ordered a harp from me this summer, you probably wouldn’t see it until late August or early September anyway. Taking more harp orders now would just put me further behind. So instead of having you wonder when you would get your harp and me feeling pressured to deliver, I will spare us both the angst. I have been in business for over five years and have rarely taken a day off much less a couple of months. And it’s not like I am going into hibernation. I’ll still be plenty busy. I will get caught up with the outstanding orders I already have. I will get comb orders out pretty quickly as they come in - unless I am out of town on one of my trips. I will enjoy spending time with my family. Play a little golf. Go to the beach. I will have some time to get prepared for SPAH – which is a lot of work. I will open things up again as far as taking orders for harps after SPAH - toward the end of August or beginning of September. Thanks for your understanding and your support.

Tom

Tom,
Ditto from me. Family comes first. You've earned some time off. As I fantasized in my last email to you, Hohner and the other harmonica companies should be paying guys like you well to run a fully equipped custom shop in which you would train customizing technicians, and work on developing improved versions of their products for the serious players and touring professionals. Of course, they will never do this, but you do a pretty good job all by yourself. Thank you for all your help and expert advice, as well the beautiful custom harps you've built for me. Have a wonderful summer of basking in the love of family, and relaxing in an occasional lounge chair enjoying a frosty drink with a little umbrella in it. You are truly a living treasure to the harp community.
