While my harmonica playing was initially blues based, I've headed in other directions. I play baroque recorder, which has influenced my harmonica style. I wrote a Harmonica World article on this a while back, available here.

Interesting Tony, that's a crossover you don't see too much. I actually used to work as a professional recorder maker at a well known workshop here in the states. Baroque music isn't really my thing, but we had some of the best players in the world come through the shop and I absolutely appreciated their playing technique and tone.

Really. Was it Von Heune in Boston? Recorder making, like any instrument craft, requires high end skills. Many years back I had a Fred Morgan alto on order. Not to be however...

Yes, Von Huene. Tragic about Fred, he actually came to Von Huene to learn at one point, long before my time at the shop though.

Hey Tony its funny how when i picked up a tin whistle a few years back i seemed to be all over it...the instrument feeling as natural as the harp.....so much so that i carry em always with my harps these days!!!!

Nice article. I really believe in taking information from one instrument to another, as you describe in the article, you can get a lot of insight that way. Many of the exercises you will see in a band instrument method book are quite applicable to the harmonica.

I think one of the reasons inexpensive instruments like the school level recorder or the basic harmonica are not taken seriously, is because many players don't take them seriously enough to study them the way you describe in the article.
