Interesting stuff. I'm fascinated, in fact. The sound that is being produced doesn't require the visuals that we get--which is to say, the two-man harp/guitar/drums OMB+ "thing", which evokes the Mississippi I know, doesn't need to be there in order to produce the sound. But somehow it's hip, now, to have that lowdown two-man wrecking-crew look. It's a new kind of roots/pop. That's interesting.
The background singers add another layer of interest. Again: if all you had were the sound being produced, you wouldn't conjure up this particular stage scenario. Yet there it is. So that's what people want now: the cocktail has some lowdown DIY funk, harp and guitar, chick singers--and, importantly, incredibly good mics and HD film.
The other thing that interests me is that the singer has exactly the buzzy, high-in-the-throat sound that I spoke about at some point in the past year as something I was working towards--a blues thing that SRV and Howlin' Wolf pioneered, something that helps the voice cut through a loud, raw mix in a smoky blues joint. He's got that.
