What do you use for jams/sit-ins?

What do other folks use for jams and sit-ins when it's not going to be practical to take your regular full rig? I usually just play through the provides vocal mic on a stand but I'd like something that blends better with an electric band. Just wondering what others do that is EASY.

High impedance mike/into
L/Wolf Harp break( don't over drive the distortion)into
L/W delay(again use low settings)
into high impedance imput on PA,cut the treble, boost the EQ around the 250 a bit(aka known as the mids)
Get it all right and you will be a happy camper

I carry a Lone Wolf Harp Tone+. I use it to civilize guitar amps.

For jams I use what is there, maybe with my own Ultimate 58 mic, or a 585SAV into a guitar amp. No time to get into hauling in and setting up a lot of gear. It is good to practice with different rigs to learn how to get the most from them.

For sit-ins with an electric band when I have cause to believe I will play for a set or more, EH 44 Magnum with Lil Buddy speaker. For acoustic sitting in, Ultimate 58.

Jams and sitting in can be good for learning to pay attention on stage, though jams are often a crap shoot as to the musicians on stage with you.

I usually just use whatever vocal mic is available in those situations. Sometimes I'll take an Ultimate 545 and a lead, just in case. On occasion I may also take a Lone Wolf Harp Attack, but usually it's just easier to play into a mic direct into the PA.

I always take a tube amp sized for the expected volume levels. My harp case has everything else I need. The Fender Champ II will cover a lot of variables, I have found...BN

At jams I usually use what's available. When sitting in with a band like the other week I have used a HarpGear RockBottom amp & JT-30 mic. I've gotten to use the bulletini thanks to a local pro and I've really liked it. I have an octave pedal but only have played with it at home so far. I also have a shaker retro rocket with me sometimes cause it's small.

I have never cared for the sound of what's provided, so I bring my Tremotone and a delay pedal and mics. Takes me less than 3 minutes to set up. Usually less than the guitar players.

@rbeetsme: I need to make sure I know what jam you'll be at and just follow you! Then I don't have to bring my own gear! LOL

Well u usually have to set up quick---many times play through a PA using an sm 58---yes u can open n close yr hands for certain effects-ie sonny terry—but if u want close to chicago overdriven tone –this might help –

1] tip the guy mixing or appropriate person

2] tell him yr pedals are set up and ready---that u have an impedance matching cord and u want to
quickly—unplug the vocal mic and plug into your pre-set pedal board

3] use a hi Z mic ie green bullet---with ¼” cord going to 1st pedal
from mic to yr 1st pedal

1] lone wolf ‘
harptone plus’ crank bass up to 3-4
oclock---decrease highs to 10-11 oclock
helps with blues tone or feedback

2] your choice
lone wolf
harp break -for simulated tube
distortion or
harp octave- for thicker sound
and distortion and helps feedback

3] the imp matching cord will have a male end ,that goes into yr pedals and plug the other end into the cord from mic u unplugged

or just use their set up—

-Ive heard one famous unnamed blues harp guy—who always plays with Chicago tone,he played through pa and sounded mediocre—actually Ive heard more than just him ,play through pa and sound mediocre--- yes u can do fine through pa
but [split octaves] [syncopating back beats] [ drawing 4draw ,8 draw split tongue also picking up a little 3draw at same time ,sounds mediocre through pa but gritty and dirty when over driven] Rod Piazza does it on chicken shack- it actually sounds bad through PA

be polite and assertive, ahead of time for monitor--cuz guaranteed the volume on stage {not yours} will be so loud you'll be playing by brail---I"ve had people say 'you sounded good' i said thanks cuz I couldn't hear myself at all

snowmwn lays out a really nice set of suggestions. My versions follows his:
harp octave & delay
The octave really does help with feedback and I use the effect on 0.5, as in almost none at all.
I have a harp break but haven't really taken to it.
IPM I use for my 57 mic and I use a 1/4 out - but maybe i should go imp there too (or DI).

Im glad u mentioned delay 'Littoral' . I wanted a short chain. I've heard a lot of pro's say in person or U tube----" once I played with delay, I sounded thin without it.For me it was YEARS b4 I finally got one . Lone Wolf.----I use slapback, I've had my harp friends around and showed them live, what the differance is, the With Without deal----They got one--

Yeah, your post set me off on the 1/4"/XLR question. I'm happy with delay but I do turn it off a lot when the song warrants it, especially with an amp. Usually a Concert or Champ for me.

I carry my 545 Ultimate (Low-Z) with a 25' XLR cable and an impedance matching transformer. So...I can go into a channel on the PA board if there is one open, or if they want me to use a mic on a stand I can unplug that mic and plug the cable into my 545, after asking permision. ALWAYS ASK if this is ok to do, but when you ask, say my mic has a volume control on it so i won't feedback or be too loud which usually gets a favoable response. I use the IMT if the board doesn't have XKR inputs or if I have to go into an amp.

Sometimes I bring my Princeton Reverb Reissue, and just plug into that. I never play in air--I always cup the mic. If I have to use a mic already on a stand, I'll take it off and cup it. If anyone objects to that, I just tell them, that's ok, don't worry about it and I just won't play, but that hasn't happenedto me in about 35 years. I never bring pedals to a jam unless I'm trying to dial in something new.

If I'm sitting in or it's a jam I'll use what's there. Might bring a mic but I probably won't use it. I'll wrap a bandanna around the head of the house mic if it's tuned to vocals. This mutes it a lot, 'cause harp played through a vocal mic has been known to kill people.

The only time I bring my own gear is for a paying gig or when practicing with my band. I charge for that stuff.
