Last night I walked down the street to a local pub in Auburn Maine to hear one of my favorite local blues bands, Juke Joint Devils, with Tommy O'Connel playing harp. He's pretty good having made the IBC quarter or semi-finals a few years back as a duo.

His regular drummer was not there and he had one of his friends, Per Hanson, filling in. Well, it raised the band to a new level. Per's drumming was some of the best blues drumming I've heard-tight, in the pocket able to sense the needs of a band he had not played with before.

He lives in Portland, Maine. Someone in the pub said he was a pretty well known drummer and i should Google him to see what he's done. So I did.

Here's a list of some of the people he's played with and composed for going back to 1988: Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, Pine Top Perkins, James Cotton, Tab Benoit, Joe Beard, Cary Bell. Lazy Lester, Raful Neal, Snooky Pryor, Charlie Musselwhite, Nico Wayne Toussaint, Little milton, Chicago Bob, Debbie Davies and Eddie Shaw.

i feel blessed to have witnessed him in my little town.

OH! the ME. is for maine. i thought you were a medical examiner :)

but anyway,a good drummer can make or break the blues set up. too many drummers think it is rock and roll,or jazz, and treat it as such.

a truly good blues drummer is a treasure.

We've fired so many drummers we gave up. I've had to yell at drummers on stage to stop using their kick drum or I was going to make them eat it. Less damage to be done with a snare. Good blues drummers are hard to find, and great ones are priceless...

I remember being in at the startup of a new Blues Band and we were auditioning Drummers........
One,and only one of them, had a set of brushes in his kit bag..he got the spot.
Ironically he never got to use them with us but the point was made..he knew about dynamics.

Per Hansen is a great drummer and friend of mine!! One of the very best blues drummers in the New England area! I've done a few gigs with him over the years.

I've got my midwest faves too. In WI Craig and Spencer Panosh lay down some of the best shuffle grooves ever. I had the privileged of sitting in with a band Craig played with one time and it was heaven. Just played with a guy named Lamond Ward from Milwaukee too who just killed it. Guys like this are rare...I don't care what anyone says...

Wanted to put a word in for Lee Williams, of Heavy Suga and the Sweet Tones and Ground Zero house drummer. I just got back from a Jam Camp week in Clarksdale. He is as good as I have ever heard. Spent several days in his presence. He backed Deak Harp up on a long set of hill country blues at one point. Superb. Nice young guy, too.

Lee Williams is a wonderful drummer. Playing with him was the best part of the jam camp experience.

Lee has been very good for a long time. I was charged by my boss (English Dept. chair at Ole Miss) with finding a blues band for a summer gig in the Grove a decade ago. I got Sam Carr, Dr. Mike, Big A, Lee Williams (Sam Carr's and Razor Blade's protege), and somebody else I can't remember right now. They all drove up to campus; I met them and we all huddled while the rain poured down, then moved to the brand-new Ford Center, where they kicked ass on the big new stage inside. Lee's always been a really nice guy and has always had a killer shuffle beat. One of the best in Mississippi, and definitely the best I know around here.

It has a dramatic effect on my playing. So many things I can do actually happen. Many of us, I'm sure, haven't had the chance to work with a drummer that REALLY knows blues. Imagine not having to concentrate, no tension, automatic and absolute pocket. 35 years, I've worked without a lot of great drummers but just 2 who played like this. Magic.
