talk about a tight fit, the base of the tube sits
right on top of the magnet housing. absolutly no room to spare. first impression... i really like it.
it has a 7 oz magnet and they made the speaker at 4 ohms.

More room if you take off the housing...

it did not come with a housing. it sits right on the tube, and it gives a slight rattle.

may have to slightly enlarge the hole on the power tube
to see if i can move the socket over a fraction of an inch. i can just barely slide a piece of paper behind the tube and the housing. it is tight. the speaker sounds fantastic,if i can get rid of that rattle.
it will be a keeper.

What amp did you put it in? Is it the low watt ceramic or alnico?

Hmmm, a mechanical interference on the glass tube clearance. This just sounds bad.
Maybe if you call it a heat sink(?).

it is an alnico, i put it in my champ.
i may need to take a dremel to it. it would be a shame to do that, but that may work. it is in there, so i will make it work somehow. this is a premium speaker.
i was afraid it would be too bright, but it is not.

I have had that problem before. Make a couple of gaskets and shim that....Oh wait, that speaker mounts to the rear of the baffle doesn't it. Crap! That's a tweed setup right? Could you front load the speaker? That may not help. Sounds like move speaker down or tube up. Just thinkin out loud here...BN

Maybe enlarge the screw holes on the speaker slightly with a drill.

Rotating the baffle 180 degrees can resolve the issue depending on where the speaker cut out is in the baffle.
I have run across that twice. Once rotating the baffle fixed the problem and on the other, had to make a new baffle with a lower cut out for the speaker.

i have a grinder out back, that may just do the trick.
or should i see if they will exchange it for a ceramic speaker. perhaps someone here would be interested in
buying it, then i could just order the ceramic.
it is a great speaker.

You could also put a small washer under one of the screws that mounts the valve socket, between the chassis and socket. This will put the socket on a slight angle ... And therefore the valve on a slight lean to get you some clearance. No destruction involved!

it looks like it may take a combination of all suggestions offered here, thank you to all for the help.

i am considering sending it back in exchange for a ceramic. i have not heard back from the supplier.
they are the ones who said it would fit. so i am interested in hearing if that it is acceptable resolution. not sure they sell alot of 4 ohm eight inch speakers.

That would work unless the tube socket is riveted to chassis? That would make it more challenging.

I have built so many baffles, I wouldn't think twice about making a new one.

Would rotating the speaker provide room for the tube?
If so, new mounting holes could be drilled in the speaker frame.
Some 6V6 tubes have pins in the bottle with no plastic base. Might work if just a couple of mm space is needed.

Geezz, a ceramic may not work either! You may have to egg out that chassis hole and slide that tube over a 1/4". Or slide the chassis back. SOABitch. ...BN

Yep tight alright. I'd stick with the alnico over ceramic. Can't quite tell if the socket is riveted in our screwed but it's in the right place to lean it away. You could remove the socket fasteners , oval the hole with a demmel tool or similar and remount. Make sure all the filings are removed with vacuum cleaner.... don't want them shorting out something. If you were really careful you could do this with all the wires connected.. Just wrap them in tape to protect against accidental grinding and pull then back out of the way.

the socket has a screw not a rivet, moving it over looks to be the best plan of attack. i also plan on keeping the alnico this is a premium speaker.
i have wanted to try one of these for the longest time.

what i find intereresting is the customer service dept.

when i first contacted them, they were very quick to respond. i asked if this speaker would fit my amp
i was very specific, on account of the weber speaker thread we had here. they said no problem.
i also asked if the holes would line up, they said they would and they did.

but once i got the speaker and mentioned there maybe an issue, they were no longer responding.

so i sent the picture to them with this note

hi thom, here is a photo with the speaker installed.
the magnet housing pushes up against the power tube causing a rattle.
looks like with some modification i can move the tube over a little.
should be able to resolve this issue.

his responce was.... It does look beautiful.

Glad you got it to fit.

"It does look beautiful"
What insulting tripe! It's a rear view of an amplifier.
tell the customer it looks good and pretend you don't realise he's complaining. He'll shut up and go away. Next!
That must be part of the retail industry crap service manual.
People try so much on!

those were my thoughts as well, perhaps i should post on a guitar forum where they would actually see the post.
i was considering buying a few of their 10 speakers for my bassman, not anymore. the wgs 10 inch alnico
would perhaps be a better option.

the speaker pushing on the tube may actually be doing damage to my amp. i used my ext cab.
and compared the 10 inch to the eight inch speaker to see what sounded better, using my guitar
the 10 inch sounded much better, i think it just passed the breaking in period, however,
when i switched to my mic. the amp shorted out. i thought i did some serious damage.
i let the amp cool down, and a just happened to have a spare 6v6 sitting on my desk
so i switched the tube out and it is working fine. the 10 speaker is 8 ohm and i conclude that is also an issue here.
along with the pressure on the power tube.. i am seriously considering taking the chassis out of the amp
and installing it in to the bottom of my speaker cab. so much for having a rare vintage amplifier. lol

I thought that amp was a kit or clone. I wondered when I saw the grounds soldered on the chassis. Wow, I never would have suggested egging out that socket hole knowing it was a real Tweed Fender! Glad you did not do it! I think your screwed! I would be on that speaker company like ugly on ape!

it has a new speaker and it has been recovered.
so i have no qualms about enlarging the tube socket.
i am not a collector. i mean it is a shame to desacrate
this little amp. i am even considring putting the chassis in my new speaker cab. i just want to get this amp back in working order. it has been giving me grief lately.

An era correct speaker can be found for that amp.

The fact that it's been recovered hurts value a little, but pretty common.

Putting the chassis in another cab is ok, won't alter it's originality if you keep the original cab.

I would not recommend altering the tube socket, because it's a vintage Fender.

I WILL SAY THIS.....

i am getting sounds out of the amp i have never got before.

the speaker is breaking in, it is getting some sort of robin trower, hendrix tones with the guitar plugged straight in.

with the harmonica it is compressing the signal.
i do not notice the rattle with the harp, just the guitar.

i have the correct speaker for it. just needs to be reconed. tone tubby will put a hemp cone on it for 80 bucks. oc speaker can fix it up for half that.

i do not mind enlarging the tube socket, this only belongs to me as along as i am alive, after that the heck with posterity.

So what about Bugsy's washer idea? No dice? From here it looks like it could be a winner.
Obviously "you can do what you want Abe, but" it'd be cool if you could sort it out without having to mangle the chassis.

it will be a week or so before i can get to it
that idea may work. the tube is already at an extreme angle, so we will see.

right now i am playing it just the way it is. the speakers need another hour or two to break in.
i am considering getting a few for my bassman.

two possible options...

i can drill 2 holes in the chassis and move it out a 1/4 inch whih would solve the problem.

i can fit a wedge behing the chassis which would not permanalty alter the amp at all

Definitely go with the wedge. Non destructive is always the better way to go wether its vintage or not in my opinion. To often we think "oh yeah that's better " and modify them .Later we try " just for fun " the original and decide that we actually prefer the earlier sound but now if course we will always be seeing the hole we drilled staring at us forlornly!

Bugfan good idea.
go even one further..if there is room, move the whole socket. It's likely you have atleast an inch. Anything would be a blessing. Your rig had better be worth it.

i have my amp at the shop. here is his initial responce.

Got it ready for the bench. Need to look at the speaker mounting relative to the power tube. It appears that the magnet structure of the speaker may be interfering with the tube electron stream. I need to measure the harmonic distortion that the tube is producing to tell if there is magnetic interference

I have heard of this but not educated enough to know if this effect actually exists?

Why did you send it out? I thought it sounded good? Maybe your electron stream likes being distorted? Might be the latest greatest thing. Magnastortion!

I wondered if that was an effect or not ... But there's plenty of amps with whacking big speakers close to tubes. Some preamp ,some are power valves....so I guess the effect can't be much.

before i changed the speaker i was having an issue
it may need a new preamp socket or a resistor.
in addition to the speaker pushing against the power tube.

i bought a tube at the swap meet for one dollar, the best way to check if a tube is good,is to put it in a single ended amp.

no need for fancy tube testers, if it sounds good in a champ,it is a good tube. however it did not work at all.

i was about to toss it, but i decided to try it in my bassman
damn, one of the best tubes ever. so i know at least it is not the tube.

I probably have a half a dozen tube testers here. Hickok, Eico, Heath, Sencore, don't use any of them. I stick the tube in the amp, if it works, it stays!

so it turns out the preamp tube socket needs to be replaced as expected. my worst nightmare has been realized, it needs a new output transformer
the tech was able to turn the speaker sideways to give it a bit of clearance. he also changed a resistor that was not stock. he said it gave the amp more headroom
and now it breaks up a little earlier. i hope i will like that change because i am used to the way it sounded. should have it back by the end of the week

More headroom but breaks up earlier? That sounds oxymoronic to me...I guess I think of headroom as clean headroom.
I'm trying to remember...is this the amp that played up with the ss tube substitute?

it had more headroom with the incorrest resitor.
he swithched it to the correct value and said
it would broke up around 5 or 6 with a guitar
he had it hooked up to a 1 12 cab to check it out.
he was like... listen to this. lol

Hmm, try sitting on the cab and playing. Try pushing on stuff while playing. You are looking for a mechanical noise maker here. Try a different speaker.

Tubes can cause rattle and you hear it thru the speaker. Sub in known good tubes, one at a time. IOW's try a different tube, no help, put the old one back in then try the next tube. Other components can cause rattle also.

Take it back to the tech and make it rattle so he can hear it. Good luck...BN

the speaker is turned 90 degrees giving it a bit of clearance. it also has a shim behind the chassis.
i thought for sure it was the tube causing the noise
i used a rubber grolsh washer between the speaker and the tube to keep it from vibrating, still no luck.

could it be a filter cap cuasing this?

Yep, could be, any component in that circuit could cause that rattling sound, electrically speaking. First you must determine if the rattle is coming from the speaker as sound or is a mechanical rattle coming from the cab/chassis, handle or some other part. Pressing on parts with your hand while making it rattle may help you find a mechanical problem. Have you tried it thru a remote speaker cab. This would isolate the amp from the speaker and help eliminate the possibility that it is mechanical as the cab would now be remote. It could be that new speaker rattling also. If that is suspicious, pull the speaker and set it on a cushion, hook it up to the amp and give it a try. You'll find it...BN
PS, did you try a different mic/cable?
