Im looking to buy a new C harp. I want to try an 1847. I want to know (from those who play them) if you prefer the classic or the silver. Ive heard a few negative comments lately about the classic comb that's made me question buying one.

If none of the stock combs are that great, it may be cheaper to buy the plates n covers. Then buy a comb from Tom.

I have a noble. It's comb is great, but heavy n bright. Which isn't a bad thing, but They are also more expensive.

I have found plastic combs more enjoyable when playing TB.

Anyways .... Thoughts?

my first choice is a session steel with 1847 coverplates.

2n choice is the 1847 silver. one thing you can do is sand down the comb on the silver or classic.
you only need to do that once. and it will last a lifetime.

Thanks. I figured as much. It's kind what i was leaning towards.

I have a few Session Steels. I love how they play. But something bugs me about recessed combs. And I don't even know what it is exactly. Maybe just a mental thing. But they are great playing Harps. And i do like them with the 1847 covers, but i would have to buy like 3 or 4 sets to put on all my SS. I do have Lee Oskar covers on my A Session. They work pretty well. I also like the thickness of the seydel Harps. I used to prefer the thin factor of the MB. But the thickness goes well with the TB embouchure, i think.

I just wish they weren't so damn expensive.

Thanks for the input yall.

Sorry to bring this back up for this.

1847 ... how do you go about getting the 1847 covers for your SS? Do you buy them seperate? I heard it's an option to get them to come that way somewhere, but i can't remember where.

Thanks.

Also. Do you have any experience with soloist covers? Was curious how they would work on an ss

You can order them seperate, or ask for them when you order a harp. i think gam7 carries them.

they are super confortable. i am not that picky when it comes to a coverplate, but these seem more like a mouthpiece. makes it feel like a professional instrument.

I know rons has almost every plate you can think of. But they are expensive. Where do you order your harps from that they give you the option?

I think it's a question of whether YOU prefer wood or plastic combs. They're both great harps. The comb will feel different to you, but the listener won't hear any difference in the sound.

And as Rupert says: you can put the Silver in your diswasher. (Has anyone actually done that?).

I have several Seydel Session Steels and 1847 harps. I am happy playing either one. If your dead set against recessed combs I would say go with the Silver 1847. The SS are great harps and just because it has a recessed comb you should not ignore it. However, I'm not a fan of the factory SS comb.

My current favorite setup is SS plates on Blue Moon comb and 1847 covers.

My only reservation is this setup pushes the price well above the 1847. But as someone once told me if it feels good to you and you enjoy playing it and it makes you want to play it more, then its worth it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is just do what you like.

Hope this helps
