I find myself called, like a moth to a flame, to the following video. Every time I return, this feels to me like the most joyous and energetic music in the world, bar none. Please give it time to play out.
But I'm willing to listen. If you've got something that can toss me to a place beyond this--energy, soul, balance--or equal to this, please post. If this thread dies a quick death, on the other hand, I'll know that I was right: it doesn't get any better than this.
Edited to add: It might help if you close your eyes and just listen.
And if that sounds like a challenge, it is.

Admittedly this isn't as funky as ----------your clip Adam, which I have tae say is mighty. I find the Gaelic lining out tradition really moving and soulful. Not a religious guy myself, but nae doubt about it the church really does have some beautiful music. http://www.reverbnation.com/#!/alprice
That gospel stuff is the most powerful music on the planet, imo. Not only are the bands tight and rehearsed, but the energy level reaches out and makes one's feet move.
Imagine being a member of this band - rehearsing, getting it tight and then playing like this...and stompin' on the Devil's head!

I like the more old style gospel music,Adams one is a bit too funky for me. I've got around 20 Cds of gospel music (not bad for an Atheist:) That Gaelic singing was awesome,i'll be searching out some more of that.
Great post AG. I lived in eastern NC back in the 80's. My only decent radio station was out of Ahoskie, NC, an AM station that had gospel 24 hors a day. Amazing stuff. I could listen to it all day and I did.
Here is a video I go to over and over again. Secular but firmly rooted in the church. Saw her play with Houston Person once wailing through two Leslies and Houston had to just step back in wonder over and over again.
Very different style church music, but it has it's own kind of great energy. It's shape note singing, and you'll also find it at a lot of old songs festivals. The four voice sections line up on the four sides of a square and the person leading the song stands in the middle- the normal choral rows you'd see at a concert may project to the audience better, but when the entire audience is participating this lets you hear the power of the other sections much better. Shape note is kind of musical notation where the heads of the notes are different shapes. Instead of using the letters the shapes represent Do Re Me etc. It's got a moveable Do, which basically just means that whoever is calling out the song picks the key just before you sing it (often by singing the high and low note and having the choir sections quickly check to see if they can hit them.)
On several occasions since moving to Oz, I have been lucky to visit one of the Pacific islands. We always make a point of dropping in to a church service if we can just to hear the singing.
We were having our last breakfast at a cafe in Suva the Sunday of our departure when some music started up nearby. Son and I went to investigate before our food arrived and found this joyous bunch in an open air church.
I am always blown away by how well the people sing, even in the remotest tiny village of a few hundred people in a jungle somewhere.
More soul power in music! This atheist... maybe agnostic? loves gospel as much as blues. Have a listen to this gospel soul:
Blues or gospel... the depth of feeling is unmatched by any other music. Harmonica content? Like the beautiful voices heard here, a harmonica is just an instrument to convey your soul's voice. Use it and let your soul shine. Musical Content? Turn the volume up and listen to the bass.

About 16 months ago, Darnisha Taylor visited our church in West Michigan. She had led a Gospel choir well over 10 years ago at a small local school, Hope College. She is now a Worship Pastor in California and was back in Michigan for a homecoming.
Here is a video of Darnisha covering a Sam and Dave tune from her DVD, but it is a good representation of Darnisha.
This was the best "church" music that I had ever experienced. Hands down.

I like Gospel- I was riveted to my seat in the gospel tent in N.O. just watching local churches perform. I just ate red beans and rice and simply could not leave to meet my friends. They went to see Stephen Stills or somebody. That evening there was a double bill- B.B. King, then Aretha Franklin. B.B. was in N.O. so he had to really put out- none of that Vegas stuff and they both had full orchestras. Well, that's another story... Anyway... .My fav is real deal soul music, like Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin, Little Milton Campbell, Tyrone Davis, Marvin Gaye, etc. etc.
PS. Yes, I know the finest soul singers came out of the church, and so the connection cannot be ignored. :-) ---------- Have good day. M.A.P. .

I posted some earlier video clips of a live community radio session during which I had the privilege to be invited to add some harmonica. There is no regular video of this, but the gospel singer, Bryan Andrew Wilson, has made his radio rendition of Stand By Me (unplugged) available on I-Tunes as part of his EP, and has posted this YouTube of the song. It was great fun, and I thought that it would fit in this thread.
