Anybody got any thoughts on these? Cost of the Sovtek. in Australia is $32 (delivered),Or for nearly twice the price, a Phillips JAN NOS 5751($60). I need one or the other to replace a 12ax7 in my HG50.

i thought i used a sovtek for a long time but seems it may have been a JJ...i lose track of these things now because its been a long time...i thought i ran a sovtek 5751 in a bunch of my amps, but when i went looking in the spare tube drawer i found a JJ which i dont remember buying...and i'm too lazy to go through all my preamps right now...
what i do know is i have one of those Philips JAN NOS tubes...if you want a 5751 to reduce the output vs a modern 12AX7, you might be disappointed with the NOS tube because IME it really puts out. great tube but not quite what i was thinking in terms of taming the amp.

I agree with Supe here. Not a lot of difference if you are trying to get rid of FB. I like the 5751 for the way it fattens the tone. Not a real big difference but I like it. Most of my 5751's are pulls that I'm not sure of the maker. I don't really pay attention to such things. I just stick um in there, if they sound good, they stay. I doubt you could go wrong with the JAN. The thing should last forever. BN

For sure if it's just a good preamp tube you're after, those Philips JAN tubes are great. I mean...that's why I first went looking in the spares drawer for the sovtek.

I have used Sovtek, ELH, JJ and JAN Phillips 5751's.
To me the Sovetk seemed slightly brighetr/harsher, although the differences are slight.
Out of those I favor the JAN Phillips first, followed by the ELH, then The Sovetek.
JJ's had a positive effect on tone, but I had reliability problems with JJ tubes, so I no longer use them.
