Yep, took the plunge and bought a guitar, just to give it a whirl. I know a bunch of cords, can strum a bit, pick a few tunes, but trying to take it to another level. Think rhythm guitar. Any suggestions for books or sites to check out, thanks.

Some of the best books I have found are by Joseph Alexander on amazon. He has a bunch. You can either buy a hard copy or for less money download the pdf and he has all the mp3 files on his site (fundamental changes or something like that) for free. I was an advanced beginner to intermediate when I came across them but they are great resources. Another great free resource is justinguitar.com which has a ton of free lessons. He just asks for donations and I recommend that if you like the site to consider giving one because he has spent ALOT of time working on that site. Just keep at it and you will get there, just like on any other instrument.
Also take a look at the site truefire.com complete online guitar university at this point. They started out many moons ago as a site that collated all the various lesson articles out of each magazine each month. Since then they have grown into a full fledged instruction site. I have a host of their video courses.
They have courses in every style from blues to flamenco. I tend to use these as idea generators. Go thru a course and cherry pick techniques that interest me. But you can go from barely knowing what a guitar is all the way to pro level playing with the site. They also have some online instruction available as well.
saw justinguitar mentioned here...justin sandercoe, grew up in this town, went to school where my daughter goes now...they have his photo on the wall in the 'local kids made good' section.
Marty Schwartz on youtube has great blues guitar lessons .
Justin does more rock than blues. He is very good on technique and theory. As an an American , I do find his accent takes some concentration to follow.
thanks for all the great responses. I will check them all out. My first step is to learn the 20 most important chords. The first song i want to learn is Long White Cadillac. E, A, B7, F#.
Thanks again for your suggestions, I know its way off topic..
The most useful book, by far, that I ever came across was Uncle Tim's First Yeat. Goofy name I know, but it takes you through each key, progressing around the circle of fifths, covering the major and minor chords in that key, along with the major scale for that key,
Theory is covered progressively, in small digestible bites at each step along the way, and pentatonic scales plus 7th chords are covered at the end.
Honestly I'm not a fan of how to play books yet with harmonica there is not much of a choice. When it comes to something like guitar If you have a Xbox or PlayStation you can use something like Rocksmith to learn the more popular songs. you can literally hook up any guitar through a provided cable with the game
This is my all-time favorite guitar book (see link below). Bought it in the early 2000s and still love it. Most of the songs are classic blues tunes you'll recognize, which makes practicing them (and then improvising) that much more effective.
