OK, I like my bullet mics in their natural metallic state. BUT I can't seem to find a clear finish that will not gum up or lift off the buffed metal. I need some advice… hopefully something short of buying a powder coating outfit :o) !!

When Rod Piazza was selling his custom JT30's, he was using automotive paint and more than a few things related to it, so it may be a good idea to talk with someone who works in an automotive body shop for some advice and where to get them. There are some auto parts stores that specialize in this area.

Walk into your local powder coating facility and put your mic shell on the counter. Do your best good-ol-boy routine and see what they'll charge you to do a clear powder on it. The place around here charges $10-$20. If it has wires inside that can't be removed, the curing heat might melt the insulation though. If you know any hot-rod builders or vintage auto restorers they probably have a home powder coat outfit for small parts that they might include your mic shell in their next batch of parts. I'll bet there are some harp mic builders that would powder coat it for you for a reasonable fee if you sent it to them. One of the previous owners of harpmicgaskets used to do it for about $30.

Then there's this stuff:

Eastwood automotive has introduced a catalyzed paint in a spray can (the can has two reservoirs to separate the paint and the catalyst). Haven't tried it but seems ideal for getting an epoxy paint without spending hundreds on the proper equipment and supplies. You will have to thoroughly clean the shell with an appropriate thinner before applying any type of finish. Nothing will stick to buffing compound.

I've been in the coatings industry for 30 years. My first choice would be a two component automotive clear coat. Go to a local body shop. They're always spraying that stuff, so they might not even charge you. Second choice would be powder coating. The reason I say second choice is twofold: first, powder coatings need be be heated to cure. That might damage the paint underneath, or the electronics inside. Second, powder coatings are electrostaticly sprayed, so if you leave your electronics inside the mic, the powder coating could infiltrate them. If you get it powder coated, make sure you have just the shell for them to paint.
