hey all,

I am new to playing the harmonica (and playing music in general). I picked up a Hohner Marine Band key of C and I have been playing around with it for a little while now. I am starting to build a bit of confidence and am getting more interested in exploring. Anyway, I am looking forward to learning lots and growing. I welcome any and all advice.

Cheers

Welcome to MBH forum getdafunkout! Have fun and don't try to force things from the harp. It is a little instrument with a lotta soul.

Thanks for the welcome. I tried farting around to a blues background track for the first time last night. I really enjoyed it (even if I did stink).

Any suggestions for a simple repeating blues chord loop I could play to practice timing? Sorry, I am not sure if I am explaining myself very well. I think I need to get a 'feel' for things. I have harmonicas in the key of C, D and Eb. I am looking to practice for about 20-30 minutes per day (more, depending on my schedule).

Again, thanks for the welcome.

Cheers

Cheers.

By the way, how do I insert an image into my signature?

I put a photo in Photobucket, took the link it gave me there, and then went into settings here and added it so it always appears in the text window I type into.

i wish you well !!
i think the best way to learn is to talk to and see live,as many good harp players as you can.

also ,befriend a blues guitarist .

also,i am not much of a jam track fan,but youtube has tons.

good luck,and jam on

Take some lessons. Adam Gussow and David Barrett for starters.
Learn the blues scale and just a little basic theory.
Learn to tongue block as well as lip purse.
Practice obsessively.
Learn songs and copy some great players.

Many are called, but few are chosen.
Of those that are chosen, few have the determination to persevere.

Building on Orphan's thought, I tell new players to literally breathe music, meaning learn to simply breathe notes through your harp, don't "blow" them.

Oh, and don't give up when you get a little frustrated, and you will. Put the harp down and come back to it later. You'll be amazed at how much you learn when you're not playing.

Good luck and keep us posted,

Michelle

I just started playing in November. I find if I get stuck on something, I move to something else for a couple of days. When I come back to the piece that was getting me stuck, I seem to always play it better after a break. Another thing that helped me was the advice to not play too loudly. That really helped with playing clean blow notes.
