I'm not sure I've accomplished what I set out to do- each spreadsheet cell has it's own code, which may make it harder to mix things up when I do the alternate tunings (the original formula worked but got lost on my hard drive somewhere).

The colors need work, but that's an easy fix. I'm thinking of something in the MBH color scheme, but I'm open to feedback. I think the reds may cause issues for anyone who is color blind. I may even be able to put the spread sheet online directly, but for now I'll use it to generate different key layouts and turn them into images, Next is position layouts (it occurred to me that a chart with the scale degrees for different positions would be helpful, hopefully with fewer transcription errors relying on a formula to calculate it than if I do it by hand.

Here is the link to the wiki for anyone who wants to make contributions. (These charts aren't up yet.) The idea is this is a teaching wiki. Wikipedia relies has lots of great info but by design their info is laid out as a reference rather than as something you can absorb bit by bit.

http://modernbluesharmonica.wikia.com/wiki/Modern_Blues_Harmonica.com_Wiki

edit- will make it bigger, may have to resize the cells to maximize the font size. The spreadsheet will calculate all the cells if you give it the key. I can make alternate tuning charts by copying the code for a cell to where it needs to be, and then it will display any key for them as well.

Further edit- Here is a link to a copy of the spreadsheet. It's in open office, which has some small differences from excel, but is similar. If anyone has ideas to improve the performance, suggestions are welcome. Big thanks to my friend Jon for helping with the formula end.

Maybe I could put the MBH logo in the corner? Don't know.

I like what you've started Nate.

On my PC, the cell for the key only works if you type upper case, there's probably a setting for that somewhere you could tweak. Otherwise it's looking good.

I don't think you need to go overboard with colours - just a couple of primaries, then tints for the bent notes perhaps.

I'll play around to see if I can get the key field to recognize lower case as well. To start with I'll just put images up. I can link to the spreadsheet, but I'm not sure how to integrate it into the wiki. Ideally, it would have a pull down menu. I'd also like to put the MBH logo in the corner with a hotlink. My HTML is awfully rusty so that may be a while though.

Here is a spreadsheet I wrote and refer to freqently.
Richter Tuned Harp Chart
(edited to point to less buggy version 2/27/2015)

It uses pull-down menus to select the key and mode.

There are a few errors I have not fixed, Minor should be 4th position Minor and 2nd position Minor should be 5th position minor. On some modes the tonic does not get indicated. Overall I find it useful. Especially for deciding which harp to use to play a piece of written music with accidentals.

You are welcome to use it or borrow the methods used in it.

Thanks STME58. That looks a lot more powerful than mine! I'll take a look at the code, but I may end up borrowing it wholesale.. There are a few more things I want to play with, but I figure the more resources we get up on the wiki the more people will use, and then contribute to it.

I fixed the bugs I mentioned but found a few more. It's been so long since I wrote it I don't remember exactly how it works. I will clean it up and re-post it. If you find any other bugs let me know and I will fix them.

When I click on STME's Richter Tuned Harp Chart link i'm getting a 404 Error message.

What am I doing wrong?

---------------------

EDITED TO ADD: BTW thanks guys for doing this. Just the other day I was wondering if these charts existed somewhere but got distracted and never bothered looking for them. I want to bookmark a page like this.

I have fixed many of the bugs, some of them were improper en harmonics. You can find the updated version here

If you got an error earlier today is is because I took down the previous version but had not yet uploaded the new one.

Edit- Okay, fixed the one part. Accidentally deleted a formula but put it back. It doesn't seem to be shading notes not in the scale though, or underlining the tonic (although the tonic is listed in A3.

The shading seems to work. I downloaded this from dropbox.

Okay, that's got to be the difference between excel and open office.

I'll have to figure out a way to host it as an excel online file.

Still working on getting this posted. I'm going to see if my friend has a more up to date version of Excel. I used a family member's computer today to try to get it online but their version didn't support nested statements beyond a certain value.

If you are looking for more stuff to add to the wiki, I'd be happy to let you use this position chart I made a while back:
position chart

Here's PDF and an XLS versions too.

It's sized to print landscape on Letter-sized paper. Big enough to be taped inside the lid of your harp case, and still be readable at a distance (that's where mine is).

STME58, yeah, that's the issue I'm running into. I can get it to do the basic layout changes but not highlighting the notes in the key/mode. The wiki also has a hard time hosting certain things. I'll figure it out though, even if I have to take screen captures of every version and post them!

Isaac, cool. A standard position chart was next on my list. (After that I was going to go into embouchures, I think).

I also need to figure out the rules for posting. The idea is anyone can add anything to the page (if they log in to wikia), but I haven't tested to see if that works in practice.

I'd like it to cover anything related to harmonica, and have a more instructive bent than the Wikipedia page. (Wikipedia has a rule that basically says you can't make the page into a how to. It's more focussed on the academic end like a encyclopedia entry.)

Just an update. I've tried to get the files to interactively 13 ways from Sunday without any luck (stuck with Open Office and Google Docs). The local library has a guy who does computer lessons for free and copies of Excel, so that's next on my list to see if I can get it working. I've kept it in an open tab in my browser to keep it at the top of my to do list. Hopefully I'll have it working soon.

I'm not sure I understand the issue that nacoran has. I have Excel 2011 and OpenOffice 3 on my Mac. I don't see the underlined tonic or off-scale shading automatically, but as those aren't dependent on the formula, I can just format the cells in OpenOffice to shade or underline. Or is there another problem I've not run into?

STME58: I downloaded the sheet, and it looks fine at the top. Do all those rows from 40 and below mean something, or are they just there for calculations on the top part?

Jason, the file works fine if you open it in Excel (there are some minor issues in Open Office 4 or Google Docs). What I'm trying to get it to do (and supposedly there is a way to do it) is to get the sheet to actually display and interact on the site. That way people will be able to use it without downloading it and use it's full functionality even if they don't have a newer version of Excel. (I tried it on an older version of Excel too.) We could do it either on the Wiki or as a page here, (also linked from the wiki). It's a great sheet. My friend and I worked a simpler one up before STME58 showed us his.

Here is a video tutorial I tried, but I didn't have the right version I guess.
