I'd like this thread to feature videos that had you saying--as the following video did by the 28-second point--"Jesus! Why isn't this guy famous?" (Or gal) If this track came on Bluesville, I would fall into a reverie and say, "Who the hell is THAT?!"

Here's his website:

Wow, great stuff right there.

I have to wonder why those folks are only giving him change, they should be tossing him green money.

Initially, I'd say something pithy...like 'now if he was standing up'.
However, he's not doing too bad. CD sales would be through the roof if he had the price clearly labelled.
cheers, Mark.

"Not everyone wants to be famous". Strange though it seems, this is true of some very talented people. I know more than a few who are gifted in various arts who shy from the spotlight, to varying degrees for a variety of reasons. I'd be interested in this musician's answer to the question. Lack of opportunity?Rip off? No venues or radio exposure? It's an interesting question and I am sure there's an interesting answer.

Why isn't this guy famous?

1. There's no autotuned robot voice.
2. There's no semi-nude choreographed female dancers.
3. No cool band name like "My Stinky Pile of Dirty Underwear".
4. No banal hip-hop lryics.
5. He exudes heart and soul.
6. He couldn't make it through the American Idol screening process.
7. There's no smoke machine.
8. He's not wearing a meat suit.
9. He hasn't appeared in a movie or TV show.
10. He's actually covering a tune and making it his own, rather than lifting out actual original recoreded chunks of the song....and calling it "sampling".

I thought this thread was to post videos of great street performance. In keeping with that possible misconception, I enter a previous guest here, Juzzie Smith.

Another rerun.

Edit to add: I don't wonder why many big talents are are not big names. Not every one possesses the desire or the ability for shameless self promotion or the means to market themselves (computer/web saavy & tenacity). For many the music itself is the thing.

I intended this thread as a place not so much for busking videos--although they're great--as for videos of people who aren't well known and should be. Isn't Juzzie pretty well known at this point? But I agree: he's great, and should be famous. As for JustFuya's other video: I loved that video the moment I first saw it. Exceptionally good groove and harp playing.

Listen to Sheldon Ziro's high-note stuff, 3:16-3:30. That is some spot-on playing.

How do you define famous? Financially, critical acclaim, having a following or being a household name?

@joeL

Joe,
Don't those criteria USUALLY go hand-in-hand?

Honkin On makes a valid point: Many singers and musicians get "famous" by being promoted in the stereotypical image that the record labels want. It's true in Nashville, it's true in L.A. Some of the best voices and players can be found busking on the street corner, the boardwalk or down at the local café. Probably the most common denominator on this forum is the love of music, our craft, our instrument and the desire to play with heart and soul.

Carl A - Not always. Blues people are rarely wealthy. They may have some degree of critical acclaim. Very few are household names. Some have a following.

Good points. It's a shame the blues aren't as widespread as they should be.

It's not just blues musicians. There are a ton of people out there who have paid dues without recognition; actors, comedians, athletes and physicists. The fun is in discovering them and drawing them out.

Here is a very talented musician that I've been tangentally aquainted with since the 70s. He had paid gigs in San Diego while I was singing & begging for my supper on the beaches and at the airport thereabouts. He now publishes 'The San Diego Troubadour' with Liz Abbott. Their monthly is an excellent source for general musical knowledge [check out the studio recording column] and local entertainment. It's a free paper that is available online: http://sandiegotroubadour.com/

Here they are, not feeling blue ...
