Thomas Hanney, a harp-playing professor at Rochester Institute of Technology, stopped by Oxford last week and we had a great time hanging out. He was here to conduct research in the Harmonica Project section of the Blues Archive at Ole Miss--research directed towards a really interesting course that he's going to be teaching there this spring.
Here's what he just wrote to me:
I spoke to my office at RIT and was told that outsiders can audit my class with instructor permission. It can be taken for credit, too, but it is a more lengthy process. So if you'd still like to list it, I would appreciate it. Here is some basic information about it. I can provide more.
Course name: The Harmonica and the Blues
Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester NY
Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 - 4:45 pm
Spring semester
Starts January 27. 15 weeks.

The course is about learning to play the diatonic harmonica, the history and culture of the harmonica and the blues, great harmonica players in the blues and other styles, basic sound concepts and basic music theory. No experience required.
