JOIN THE SPAH TEAM!

SPAH is looking for a new team member to participate in managing the annual SPAH convention.

How’d you like to make a major contribution to SPAH – with plenty of support and guidance from the old hands on the SPAH team?

If you’ve enjoyed a SPAH convention, you’ve come to appreciate how smoothly it runs while offering an incredibly rich experience. A huge part of that smooth operation is the work of the convention director. Working with the rest of the SPAH team, the role includes:

PRIOR TO THE CONVENTION

- Participating in evaluating hotels for future conventions, including site visits

- Monitoring hotel room occupancy and preparations during the registration period

DURING THE CONVENTION

- Working closely with the president, be the primary interface between the convention hotel
and the SPAH working team (including the local host club)

- Managing pre-convention preparation with SPAH and hotel staff

- Overseeing the allocation of rooms

- Managing flow of meals and banquets

- Working with the hotel on placement of signage - make the space feel like “SPAH”

- Managing any special requests

- Coordinating the above with members of the SPAH working team who are responsible for programs, events,
and logistics at the convention. Team members will handle space planning and logistics, event registration,
vendor relations, production, entertainment, seminars, transportation, tours, and youth activities.

AFTER THE CONVENTION

- Working with the president and treasurer to resolve final billing with the hotel

- Participating in making improvements for the next SPAH convention

Having been Convention Director for 3 years in the good ol' days, we found that Convention Director works effectively to create and coordinate events/talent/video/artist booking/workshops/artist hospitality, backline, press releases, etc. on his own.

Hotel Bookings, meals, rooms is a different category all together, handled by a designated Hotel Liaison.

Combining the two is not effective in the fact that it pulls two diverse concepts together and lands them on the shoulder of one individual, a recipe for frustration and overwork - regardless of support from the Pres, etc.

Since the fun is in the talent/workshop/artist side and the hotel side is more grunt work, those who have been doing the former recently will no doubt not wish to relinquish their control over these aspects, making it a bit awkward for whoever you are looking for to be creative - instead turning them into more of a minion than a force.

In my experience, Convention Director is the point person for the experience itself and the best approach is to find someone who can handle this without stifling oversight and turn them loose. Most effective and eliminates those bulky committees and running every idea through so many approvals.

I have total experience in the Convention Director aspect, but could only offer my services if left unhindered by politics and committees, something that the current model of SPAH leadership hasn't embraced since the Tate Philosophy changed the course of this organization. Therefore, I don't consider myself a candidate.

Wish you all the best in finding someone suitable for your current philosophy.

Sounds like a job for Hal Iwan who did this sort of thing for years for his Union.

Thanks for your observations, Larry.

The position as described has functioned well for several years now. All the other positions mentioned also have solid, committed appointees, none of whom wish to take on the CD position, so reapportioning duties as you suggest would not be practical under present circumstances.

Things evolve and it's always worthwhile to at least consider alternate possibilities. However, for the present time the job as described is what we're dealing with.

@Lonesome Harpman - if Hal is willing to step up and offer to do the job, we'd be willing to consider him.

"I need a volunteer--YOU!"
Hal seems like a solid gent, wonder if he's looking for trouble?
