Nice post here and it shows a lot more of the business side of music, which most people really don't have a clue about.

O.K., Well, I'll have to take issue with the "which most people really don't have a clue about". Everything he/she(/) itemizes could easily be tallied up in an excel spreadsheet months before climbing into the van. It's very similar to budgeting a season of motorcycle racing, campaigning an Olympic sailboat, or selling Girl Scout cookies. Money going out vs. money coming in. Everything he/she lists is practically a constant. IMO the wild card is, what will the residual payoff be?
Now, if you were to say "which most musicians don't have a clue about" that might be another discussion, though maybe just a little insulting to most musicians.

Now when I said "most people don't have a clue," what I am referring to is the casual listener/music fan and to a great extent, many of the participants of open jams, but at the same time, let's be real here, because there certainly ARE musicians who have no real clue about the business aspect of music, even more so from the bandleader's side of things and for a sideman, it's easy to complain that you ain't making money on a gig, but as the leader, there is so much more involved to keeping the band together than even what the article lists here and as the bandleader, you're often having to have the extra job of damned near being a psychiatrist too because there are times you're gonna wind up doing hand holding that can be a real pain in the ass and every band member has varying amounts of ego that you may need to stroke sometimes or flat out kick them in the ass sometimes as well, and then there are the club owners/managers/talent buyers/promoters to deal with as well and then on top of the lodging problems, etc.

I work a day gig and it comes in under $40k. Wife retired and maybe $10k from that. Our music income is very small but it is in the black over all. I think. Not only writing, arranging, and creating new material, but promo, keeping up with gear, wear and tear on our one vehicle, even on a small scale this avocation can be difficult to make work.
$60k a year for two people is not so much these days. I have to applaud those folks if they can make it work and keep a house and home in the bargain.
One thing is true for most working musicians, pro, semi, or amateur: If you want to pursue music, and a dream or a career, you WILL sacrifice.
Peace to you all!
