In the Wikipedia article on Harmonica techniques, Sugar Blue is listed as a lip purser. Yet in Glenn Weiser's book of harmonica solos, he's quoted as saying "I use tongue blocking only". I have no idea how to input a Wikipedia article -- any thoughts?

I contribute to Wikipedia regularly. The problem is, making a change of that nature to the article would need some kind of verifiable online source to use as a citation. If you can find something like this online ungar, you can email me a link to it and I'll be happy to see what I can do...

Hi Hawkeye,

I found this reference to the same interview that Weiser refers to:

http://harp-l.org/pipermail/harp-l/2006-August/msg00733.html

I don't know if that helps.

the reference is to an interview almost 20 years old. ...but certainly seems he was pretty solid on TB back then...and was well-established by then of course, so may still be a valid reference.. Steve Harvell was the interviewer..he is a sometime contributor here...

I just messaged him on Facebook. I'll report back if and when he replies.

I don't know about his tongue blocking or lip pursing, but I LOVE his "Pontiac Blues" I listen to it at the gym every day.

When Sugar Blue came to HCH 2011, he pointedly told us, all 100+ of us, that he was a full-time tongue blocker. He said that it was studying with Big Walter that had turned him completely in that direction. I'll admit to being surprised; I'd been quite sure that he was mostly a lip purser--especially on those lightning fast high note runs. Nope. So I'm glad he reiterated this point.

Thanks for posting that Goldbrick,

maybe someday I can blow enough of that to feel like I could play it in public.

Till then I'll keep on practicing. . .

I see Adam answered the question definitively, but for he sake of completeness I though I'd mention that Sug just told me via Facebook that he's been a 100% tongue blocker since day one. He said he didn't know there was an easier way (pucker) until much later.

So it looks like there's plenty of evidence for his TBing. Hawkeye, do you think you could change the article on that basis? It's the one called "Harmonica techniques".
