The whole tune rocks, but the harp is at the beginning.

If you'll listen to more of John Popper, besides 3 popular youtube clips you'll hear that Popper has incredible taste and sense of melody (don't forget he wrote most of Blues Traveler songs with pretty cool melodies). His "unmusical" fast runs is the thing which makes his music unique. Just listen to phrasing in his solos.

Agree with Boris. Popper gets undue flack for his speed and commercial success. His melodies and general musicality go underappreciated, especially by some on this forum.

Popper gets flack not so much for his speed as much as his execution of that speed. I've listened to Popper since BT first appeared on the national scene and have been ambivilent about his playing. On the one hand I respect what he's able to do, craft a unique sound, and on the other have wished he was able/willing to actually use his speed in a cleaner, more effective way. His harmonica playing at full speed is the equivilent of Kerouac's more rhapsodic prose, which means that he's verbose and hyperactive and really cannot capture the rushing thrill of sensation because there there is the mistaken idea that speed equals inspiration. Engery, maybe, but not inspiration. It sounds odd coming from me, a speedster of repute for ill and otherwise, but Popper's playing has never dne it for me. For speed, I will take Howard Levy, Jason Ricci,Sugar Blue Norton Buffalo, a good number of others who put speed in the service of music, not grandstanding.

Cleaner?

I started to type a bunch of examples of this type of playing, but realized it wasn't worth the time. Ted, I don't think you have a lot of insight into Popper's playing.

Yes,cleaner. He has it in him to do better. He is often superb; he is just as often muddled and random in note selection and pitch. That said, I hand it back to you.

I didn't say often, I'd say sometimes and very rare.
I always hear stories in his solos.

Doesnt have nearly yhe taste or class of the original.
And no, I am not saying a cover is a[ways inferior.

I am just saying the Tucker boys win on all counts= Popper is pretty good- slide guitar intonation is off.

But then again I dig sal paradise and dean moriarty
