My band played the Hard Rock Café in Waikiki last night. It's a good gig because the crowd is very international. Japanese, French, German etc. etc. No one is going to request Free Bird. We can play Real Gone Lover, Baby Can I Change My Mind, Cissy Strut, and really go over well just playing what we like to play.

Anyway, Hard Rock passes out crayons and paper for some reason and a five year old really liked the band. He drew me a picture of what looked like chairs and his family and wrote "thank you, Brandon". He walked up and presented it to me during break. I was very touched and am saving his
"fan mail". Perhaps this sounds silly but I think it's beautiful.
Kids love music. At the end of the gig Brandon fell asleep but his older sister whom was about 7 got on the drum kit and she was very unhappy to be removed when we had to go.

MP, that is a beautiful experience. For you and for the kids who liked you and your music so well. We always hope for something like this, it can't be arranged or forced. It is true validation when it does happen though! I am smiling inside and out!

That is one of the 2 reasons I keep a couple of new, cheap harps in my case.

Wait, you mean there was no criticism about whether you were too modern or adhering too much to the tradition? He made no mention of whether you were making enough use of your opportunites to overblow?

How about your tone....did he say anything about your tone?

The gear...... he must have remarked about your set up, didn't he?

I don't know why you'd want to save the guys piece of fan mail...doesn't sound like he knows much about harp or the blues to me.

Wow, Yeah that's nice. Kids really are the best. The other day I blew through my amp, something I very rarely do when my family isn't away somewhere. One of the neighbour's boys asked my four year old daughter: "What's that sound?" To which she replied "It's my cool dad playing harmonica". I'll cherish those word and remember them through her teens...

The other day she also told me to "Pull up your pants dad, they're falling down" and reminded me very much of my mother :)

Precious!

Mesmerizing the impressionable. I've had wee ones stare to the point of my distraction. Am I playing a small part in planting the seed of a budding musician or is a crumb from that last snack hanging from my beard while the the kid mentally coaxes it to fall off?

If circumstances are appropriate I encourage them to share their thoughts. Veritas in vino and developing minds.
