Has anybody had any experience with the 8" Tone Tubby Low Watt Alnico in a Champ or Champish amp? I'm thinking of replacing the speaker in my HG1.

I have no firsthand experience, but I'd wager it to be a safe bet. Hemp cone is always a plus, and TT has an outstanding reputation. They ain't cheap...but its on my shortlist for my Lonewolf build.

The Eminence 820h is a real good hemp cone 8 and a little more reasonbly priced.

What is wrong with the tone of your HG1? What speaker is in there now?

@JJ - Currently a Weber Sig8. It's not terrible or anything but sometimes it just sounds a bit grating in the upper mids.

I once swapped the CTS for a Weber 10a100 in a Kalamazoo. The Weber brought a quality to the tone and a perceived increase in volume with very little loss of break up crunch.

Basically, cheap speakers sound like cheap speakers. Sometimes that can be a cool thing but I'll swap that nastiness for a bit of warmth and quality.

BTW, the HG1 is a pretty damn good sounding amp. Lately the majority of our gigs have been low volume affairs so I've been using it a lot.

I'm with Hawkeye on this. No experience but should be good.
Be ready for an eye opener when you upgrade from the Sig. Let us know what you think. Thanks...BN

Paul...I agree about the 820H. Good speaker and lower priced. But it's also a ceramic as opposed to the alnico LSC's looking for. There's a difference in sound between ceramic and alnico...some can discern it by ear, others can't. But alnicos are harder to manufacture, and as a result, are more pricey.

A very wise amp guru friend of mine (in some ways my mentor in the field) always says: "when it comes to harp players, I put them through a blind test. I hook up an alnico and have them play without looking, then I hook up a ceramic and have them play again. Then I ask which speaker's tone they like better. 9 times outta 10, they pick the ceramic, even though they'd come in wanting an alnico."

I'd never heard that Bob. I'll look into it. It seems a little sketchy of a claim to me...just considering that Eminence is pretty much the foremost speaker manufacturer on the planet these days...

I have the Eminence 8" Hemp in my '74 Champ and really dig it. I had tried a number of other 8" speakers before taking a leap of faith on the Em. (Tried OLD Rola and OLD Heppner alnicos and new Weber vintage alnico as well as new Weber vintage Ceramic. [one was the 125 and one was the 150, but don't remember which was which] Of those the Weber Ceramic was my clear favorite.) I generally prefer ceramics over Alnicos, for what that is worth. I considered going with the Tone Tubby low watt, but after hearing all the good things about the Eminence 10" lil buddy hemp cone, I decided to save the money! Would love to hear/try the TT alnico though!
