I like the statement regarding his list of requirements, "None are unreasonable" and requiring that each request be initialed. It's not necessary but certainly eliminates tampering or any misunderstandings. You can't say "I didn't agree to that." i'm sure that is not Watermelon Slim's first tour. You would remember all the times that you got taken advantage of and try to eliminate those issues.

"This is the only arrangement we will accept -- don’t even think about changing this. INITIALS______"

Love it.

I hope he has a good remedy for breach, such as

"If you fail to provide the items listed above, I will go down to Louisianna and get me a Mojo Hand and John DeConceroot. You will then be hoodooed and later sued. INITIALS_______"

This contract rider is actually more than reasonable from my own experience and I remember while I was on the road with Luther Guitar Junior Johnson in 1988, we did a gig at a hotel in Chatanooga, TN and we were the opening act for a group that shall remain nameless and I got a chance to sneak a peek at that band's contract and the rider on the contract was about 8 pages long in 12 point font and demanded things like the dressing room must have the temperature no lower or higher than 72 degrees F, the types of fruits and vegetables and other snacks and the types of bottled waters that must be there, and a helluva lot more.

The original reason why that riders were placed on contracts was originally to make sure that the talent buyers/booking agents/club managers/promoters FULLY READ the contract as too often they didn't fully read them and so these were there to protect both the artist and the venue from certain liabilities and some artists do take them to extremes.

Even if you're not a full time touring pro, always have gigs with either some sort of written contract or if not, a letter of confirmation that shows every detail discussed when doing any booking so there is some sort of proof, but when it comes to riders, these can be easily abused and until you're at a point where regardless of the day of the week or time of the year and you're playing venues that have a capacity of at least 250+ and packing them all the time regardless of the day of the week, you're not going to be in a position to make any kinds of demands.

I too found this rider to be reasonable (although it does make you chuckle) because you can see how the musician likely got screwed in the past. And clearly this rider has been forged with the benefit of some past experience. Landing at the airpot of a foreign country and not speaking the language or knowing the pitfalls to avoid is troublesome.
