Cotton deserves huge respect for what he has done - but last time I heard him perform he had sadly lost a lot of his former glory. I'd have to say for pure blues, Wilson/Estrin/Harman - though it is hard to leave Charlie out, or Dennis, or Hummel, or so many others who are outstanding.

OT, maybe, but somewhat germane: Joe Pass told the story of playing in various places all over the world and that often times, after a gig where he felt he played especially well , someone would come up to him and remark that there was a local guitarist that is better than he was. Pass wondered if this was restricted to jazz musicians. Does a classical musician, for example, have the the experience of having someone come to him or her after a recital and report that there was cat up the road that "makes your Mozart sound like crap."?

Ted, I have heard so many times, "In every city there is a guy who can play harp as well as Kim Wilson who didn't either put in the time to become famous or get lucky enough to become famous." I think it's bull. There's a reason why Kim's name gets mentioned again and again, because he's crazy good. Are there people as good? Of course.

1. Cotton
2. Estrin
3. Gary Smith

This is purely on who gets me excited.

Glad to see Cotton's name mentioned!! I had not really listened to my Cotton collection much in the past three years. I started some deep listening recently and picked up LOTS of cool stuff I missed or was not advanced enough to understand what I was hearing back then.

He can make simple sound unbelievable! His double stop bend on hole 3 or 4 are amazing. Would LOVE to have seen him live in his prime!
