Well..it turns out one of the top tap dancers of the day is a blues nut. And all those years of hosting instructors at our house during the Tap Festival, driving them all over, feeding them and playing blues and harp at every opportunity has paid off!
Michelle Dorrance is in town as the Saturday night headliner with her Dorrance Dance troupe doing excerpts from The Blues Project as part of the performance.
They do a Slow Blues into St.Louis Blues into a Jimmy Reed tune. I got the call to blow harp on "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" last Monday. Played acoustic with Michelle and another dancer singing the vocals at my elbow while Karida Griffith danced a solo. Tons of fun. And what generous welcoming people. The welcomed me into the "family" with warmth and respect (and boy were they happy to have some killer harp on that tune!)
Here's a sample of the stuff they are doing. Michelle is one of the soloists in second part, in blue, long hair. Such a sweet heart.

Back in the day, tap dancing was right up there with jazz and improv. There were even head cutting street tap dancing contests.

Following is from a movie well worth seeking out...Stormy Weather.

headcutting as shown in the movies...

To end one of the classes they are going to drop 30 or 40 individual tap boards onto the main pedestrian mall in downtown Vancouver at 5 pm and have a "Tap Out" session.
