The recent thread about backing tracks, and particularly ADAM's salient comments about the importance of "stage time" led me to post a video a friend recently sent to me...

The video took place last Spring and consisted of a pick up RHYTHM SECTION (full disclosure - the guitarist and I have played together before but he had not touched a guitar in over a year). The bass player mostly played in a Country Swing band and the drummer was/is in a Beatles Tribute band...THis was our first time on stage together...

I post this to point out the uncertainties associated with such gigs - mainly to show it warts and all! For me what stands out that night was the bass player being in a bad mood and missing stops, starts as well as forgetting basic blues progressions. At on point you can hear me repeatedly tell him to "stay on the one"... The drummer was a great player but not really schooled in blues shuffles or grooves...

overall it was fun and I would like to think entertaining but it was also - at times - a lot of work!

I am singing and playing into a sure vocal mic that is plugged into my 4x10 guitar amp...

kinda related...

our local live music hall had a fun night, sort of like a jam but not really. Mashup.

Musicians signed up and listed their skills. The MC made up 6 bands from the list of musicians. Each band then had a week to come up with one cover and one original. Then they all competed in the same night.. Mash up.

It was really fun, there was some great music, and the place was packed with all the friends who came to vote, there was bribing of judges and buying of votes (all proceeds to charity) and lots of drinking a great party, all pickup musicians!

Great harp playing! Great groove, too, on that first song. The drummer is doing pretty darn good if Beatles tribute playing is his main thing! He's got a light touch--maybe too jazzy and light.

@KCBlues - thanks for sharing. Nice harp (and vocals)

You seem very calm and relaxed, which is an important part of playing live. If things were not going so well with the band, you did not show it. Thats an important skill acquired through live performances. It is always full of surprises, mistakes, improv, inter-band alignment issues, and equipment issues - the key is to learn to roll with it, which you do a great job of in this video.

Also - I like the light jazz-funk touch to the rhythm section. I think its good to fuse styles, and not always play blues classics "by the book".

Never mind pick up musicians, this video has much to offer.

I liked so many things about your playing, Kurt Crandall. Your pitch is good, you play rhythmically, you play creatively.... you sing! You sound bluesy, too.

You've been listening to the masters. I picked up on your reference to Little Walter's "One of These Mornings" at 8:48. It was a treat to hear all of this. I don't often listen to the offerings by forum members here, because, harmonica skills aside, they lack "bluesiness". Just my opinion. I had no problem listening to this whole video though; it was bluesy.

Please post more.

Cheers,
